Hello there, I am a total newbie and first off I would like to apolgize for my first post being a newbie question.. but I am in somewhat of a predicament and I have no one I can ask for advice in this situation.

I am living in japan teaching english and I have decided to buy a PS2.. I can get one cheap (about 10000 yen or $100 US) but I am worried about being able to play US games.. i assume they are considered imports here and the probably wont load on a japanese system. I have considered buying a pre modded PS2 online but after doing a little bit of research I have found that swap magic and a flip top cover would probably suffice and cost me much less. Before I commit to anything I wanted to talk to sombody in the know to address my concerns. Can this be done with a japanese machine? I dont see why not but then again I really have no clue... the last console I bought was a SNES in 1992!! I dont really have a need to play that many games.. i can buy a japanese version of GT4 here and I'm sure I can play it without being able to read the Kana (japanese alphabet) but when I want to pick up a copy of FFX id like it to be in english and I would like to be able to load on my system.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me with my issue. I apoligize if I am in the wrong forum all together. i really am clueless and a little bit desperate. Flame me if you want, it wont bother me :P

You should have no problems with a fliptop case and swap magic operating on a Jap PS2 (I have a PS2 which I bought in China with a chip which works fine in my country - Australia). Though living in Japan you should have no probs getting a premodded PS2 for a reasonable $$. The swap magic is able to play most games but not all (i.e. GT4/God of War/Mercenaries/Fantastic 4...need to be rebuilt/patched). I have a few Jap games (i.e. Silent Hill 4) and they all give me the option of using English subtitles (just check the back of the game covers which will tell you if they also have English subtitles).

wow man thank you for you quick reply.

I bet I could find a pre modded PS2 somewhere but it is hard for me to find.. I dont have any friends here that are into that sort of thing and I dont know who else I can ask. Im not to worried about playing pirated games but rather just imports. hmm i really want to go buy a system right now and a copy of GT4. and the worry about the swap magic later... but i guess I shouldn't rush..
