Ok so I started with an Optorite DVD burner which worked fine with the DVD media I had (Ridata DVD+R 4x) ... it was working fine with this media for a little over a year. Then it decided to stop recognizing DVD media all together so I browsed around these forums and found someone with a similar problem (not recognizing DVD but recognizing CD)...most people said to buy a new burner. So I went out and bought a new burner...it is giving me the same error...whenever there is a DVD in there (blank or a store bought DVD) all of my programs say that the drive is empty.
So two burners..one of them brand new, both not recognizing DVD media...I figured there must be some error with the software or drivers so I formatted my computer and updated the firmware for both burners...still not recognizing DVDs.
I am completely lost because usually new hardware and/or formatting solves everything.

It is probably not the burner. If you are using windows, go to the system devices uner the control pannel. Check the diagnostics there. You might also try re-installing windows but I would contact the tech support for the vendor first. A Windows reinstall maintains all the software and hardware installed but it refreshes all the system files. Hopefully, one of those are croupt for some unexplainable reson.
Good luck!

Any software that I use. I tried Nero and I tried burning from DVD Shrink as well. I tried playing using Windows Media Player and Power DVD. Also I have the computer set up so when a disk is inserted the pop up with choices of possible actions comes up...Well nothing is coming up at all with the DVDs.
I did check the diagnostics and it said it is working fine. I tried changing the region encoding to match that on my DVD-Rom which is working fine. When I formatted my computer I did reinstall windows. I deleted the partition, recreated it, formatted it and reinstalled windows. That is why I am completely clueless. I am not sure who to contact even because the burners are both two different brands having the same problem.

a-ha, in which case i can help.. post LAST section of your Nero log, which is in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar

I did upgrade Nero and that is when the problems started. That is why when I formatted the computer, I only put the old version on to see if it would work then.
Actually I was wrong. The original drive is not detecting DVD media but it is detecting CD media. The new drive is not detecting anything at all. Maybe the new drive I got is broken? I'm going to call Newegg and see if they have any suggestions.

let's not be drastic. update Nero again, this time do a 'simulation burn' in Nero to generate a logfile entry. then paste that here and i'll see what we can see.
something to try after if that doesn't work would be to aste the (long) output from Nero's info tool...

And the aborted by user is because I have to cancel it in order to get the log file. I tried using both DVD+R 4x and DVD+R 8x and also a DVD-R that doesn't have a speed written on it.
It isn't playing audio cds or anything either. I think someone might have dropped it or something.

- always possible, but it's worth contuing as we'll end up doing all this with a new drive anyway. at least you'll have a thread to refer to if you swap the drive later..
do the DMA thing and try another simulation burn. Also we need to check what media you got. download dvdinfopro (free from www.dvdinfopro.com) and run each of the discs in question, thru it's media info check, pasting results from one of each different disc here...

I figure it is a hardware issue. I stuck the drive in two other computers and am getting the same no disk in drive error. When I took the drive out I also looked at it and it looks like one of the pins is broken in half. I don't know if that would have anything to do with it but it is seeming to be more and more like they sent me a broken drive. I hate to keep putting you through all of this if that is what it is.
The last drive that I got I just stuck it in there and it worked flawlessly for about a year. I thought all of this stuff was supposed to be plug and play?
I would try it with my other dvd burner which is also broken I think but the only working IDE cable I have is too short to reach it and I can't switch the bays because it is screwed in too tight. If there is a secret to that though let me know :)

Do you think it is possible that it could be caused by the broken pin though? I figured that a broken pin would cause Windows not to even see the drive. Well I know the pin is broken so something isn't right and I am getting it replaced...if I am still having problems when I get the new one though I know right where to come back to. :)

In the picture it is the second row 12th pin in. I am not sure what pin number that is though. It isn't quite missing...just broken in half.
