Hi guys.. on the assumption that I could simply copy files to a 9 gig DVD using a dual layer burner; would this then play on a domestic player?

It depends on your dvd player. Setting the booktype to DVD-Rom would help for better compatibility, but if you dvd player has a problem with playing dvd-r/+r discs, then chances are you'll have playback issues with DL discs as well. Only way to tell for sure is to try it and see. Good luck.
