Hi guys... I've got these subtitles I'd like to rip from my VOB files. How do you extract "only" the subtitles? I don't want to spend time demuxing the whole file when I only need the sub file

no worries. maybe you can do me a favour as i'm stuck on a similar problem. i have an AVI, i also have a subtitles file to add to it. i've tried a few programs but the best i can do is edit the subtitles themselves. How do i add them/convert or whatever, i just couldn't figure it out yet ?

Excuse me, but are you trying to hardcode the subtitles to the video, that is? In other words, make the subtitles permanently embedded to the image?

yeah, or the very least, selectable in the final output. ultimately i want to convert the movie to DVD format. i don't know if having the subtitle selectable is possible (there are already 2 selectable subtitle languages in the AVI that i can turn on and off when watching the film)

So, let me see if I get you straight:
- Which kind of output would you desire? DVD?
- Where would you like to select the subtitles?
- Are there more than 1 subtitle streams?

yup, it'll end up in DVD format.
as to the subs, it has 2 built-in subs already - japanese and french and maybe arabic (wierd for a japanese film i know).
- i don't mind whether the subs are on all the time (ie not turnoffable). the audio in the film is japanese and french but as long as i can read it in english i'd be happy...

Then if a DVD is what you desire then you should care about subtitles when you're authoring your project. Do you use DVDLab Pro?
IIRC you can have up to 8 different subtitle streams there.
Are all of your subs in sync? If at least one of them is in sync with the movie, you can have the rest of them syncronized just by using Subtitle Workshop. That way you do not have to do it manually.

lol as i can't read or speak any of those languages i'm just content to have the english subs so i can get the idea of what's going on in the movie...
haven't used/come across DVDLab Pro, but used subtitle workshop.

Sorry but the newborn baby is draining most of my time...
Yes, we non-native english speakers are very anxious about how to learn the use of subs... lol
Which tool do you use for authoring? DVDLab Pro (u can get it at http://www.mediachance.com ) lets you handle up to 8 different subtitle streams.
You need to have at least one subtitle stream synchronized (you mentioned having subs in other languages, so I suppose at least one of them is at sync) so it can be used to syncronize later your english sub. Open Sub Workshop, load the English subtitle and choose the fps of the subtitle and the desired output fps. Then go to Edit -> Time -> Syncronize with other Subtitle (Edit is 2nd menu IIRC) and select the subtitle that already is syncronized. You´ll notice that times in your sub in English adjust automatically. Save it with *.srt extension.
Now open DVDLAb Pro and go to movie 1 (u need to import the mpv and mpa files to your project, theres a guide at the Guides section on how to do that) and double-click over sub1 stream. Import your English sub, select generate stream (u can choose the color, margins of the sub and such things too) and type the name of the desired new subtitle stream. Once finished you´ll see that a green bar appears on the sub stream meaning that the subtitle is ready to use!!!
