O.K.

Not sure if this has been addressed. I have the NEC 3520a burner, brand new, 2 weeks old. Bought a 50 pack of ritek 16x dvd-r discs. the first 5 burned right at 16x. Option was rigt there in Nero. NOw, I can only choose up to 12x all of a sudden...wtf? I know it aint to much diffrence, but where did the 16x option go? I dont get it. Got the latest firmware and didnt have the problem the first few. Still burns fine mind you, but I just want to know why the 16x option disappeared. If anyone knows why this would happen I would appreciate any poitive feedback. If this has been answered b4, I appologize.

This is a firmware problem. Noted: You've got latest firmware. Just read up on the subject on http://www.bitburners.com. It seems that the firmware for some drive manufacturers haven't yet caught up to some of the disc manufactures. The info I read was referring to Datawrite Titanium DVD-R 8x being played on various DVD-Rom drives and PS2 and DVD players and also recording with the LiteON SOHW-1653S, Plextor PX-716UF and Pioneer DVR-109 with the latest firmware revisions available. This disc is among the best but only played best on the Pioneer at 6x speed not 8x. I suggest checking out what brand is best suited for your burner and go with that. I have an NEC as well. Since money got tight I had to change to a less expensive brand Sonic DVD+R 4x and it has served me well. Now more to the point; even though you burned at 16x a few times before, an adjustment took place for optimum recording stability at the maximum speed. In your case, 12x rather 16x. Hope this helps to explain. You can read the info yourself from the homepage of the site I mentioned.

Here's a link provided by fellow member l8nights; http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters for media compatibility with burners.

Forgot to mention. The slower the burn, the less chance for errors. 4x speed is generally acceptable speed.

Well, I think I have found the problem, and it rhimes with MEDIA. Using several of my Ritek 16x DVD-R and DVDInfo Pro, It kept coming up max speed of 12x. so I switched to my rooomates Memorex 16x DVD-R and guess what? there was 16x. I got ripped off, and will never buy Ritek Ridata again. SUre, it may be a bad batch, but I paid for 16x and thats what I should get. Granted, 12x aint a big deal and as everyone reccomends to burn slower anyway for less errors. Still, kind of frustrating when the first few burned at 16x now I realize that switching media did the trick. How lame. Just wanted to post my reply. Thanks for the help and info YOBUZZB,

Kommi30, before you knock Ritek media let me ask you how you ran your test. Did you run it in the NEC3520 burner or in your friends different burner. I say this because every burner has its favorite media. I speak from experience because I own a NEC3520 and Ritek is not one of its favorite media. This is a burner and firmware problem, not a media problem. I have burned Ritek G05 (rated at 8X) at 8X and 4X and got good burns.

If you want 16x burns try the TY or Verbatim media, my 3520 will burn the 8X +R of those media up to 16X if I so desire.

I used my burner, he doesnt have one. I am sure it may be a firmware issue but its still annoying. Yeah no big deal burning at 12x or even 8x, but I have read a few threads about Riteks and others that say one speed and burn at another. Whether or not that's all firmware issues I don't know. I have always uded Riteks and they have been good, but alas on this burner I may use Memorex or Verbatim or others from now on.

What firmware are you using?
Some good "hacked" firmware for your 3520 can be found here:
http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/

Also here is the official NEC firmware website.

Well, I must thank you. I went on that hacked site and got this:

3520fast.zip NEC 1.04 with RIPLOCK removed (Dee-27). +R DL is set to auto booktype DVD-ROM

I had 1.04....realized there is a 3.05, but changed to the most recent hacked firmware instead which is what I showed you above. I don't know what the diff between the NEC 3.05 wand this is.. but I'll stay with this I guess. DO you know the major diff? SO now all my riteks are showing up as 16x...They must have also included somthing to remove that flag for riteks or somthing...anyway's much appreciated! great site too.

Thanks for all your help....

Shane

@Kommi30
Shane, glad I could be of help. The official NEC firmware site of which 3.05 is most recent version just adds "more media compatibility." NEC never explains so I can't add to that.

I have used over the past the Liggy and Dees Version 1.UG and the 2U1 for my 3520. Both have been excellent firmwares removing the riplock off the 3520 and allowing bitsetting for +R media to DVD-ROM which the official NEC firmware will not do. Generally the hacked firmware will allow faster burns with 4X going up to 8X and 8X going up to 12X or 16X.

Everytime NEC comes out with a new official version Liggy and Dees generally comes out with a newer hacked version. Watch those two sites I gave you above because the firmware is updated often..

Happy burning....
