A guy I know at blockbuster told me they are using a new plastic film on the bottom of the DVD's that if you try to burn it the DVD will get destroyed and you will have to purchase. Figured he was pulling my leg but thought it was interesting. Anyone heard of it?

I don't have a Blockbuster or Netflix account, but I think this holds ture for any commercial DVD - bought, rented, or borrowed froma friend. All you are doing is READING the disc - either from a PC burner or standalone player. They have no idea if you are burning anything since the DVD is DVD-ROM (read only) and most likely PRESSED and not burned (no burning dye). You cannot write to it at all. As for the "plastic film", it is not cost-effective. I'm surprised most DVDs don't get destroyed in the mail already.

If that was true the disc would also break in the dvd player. LOL, The blockbuster corp could care less no way will they spend there money to save other corps money.

I seen another thread on this site, a guy claimed a blockbuster rep accused him of burning movies the rep said the edge was burnt.
well we no that aint true,Blockbuster messin with peoples heads?

I like hollywood video better I think.

Them kids in there are allways talking about backing up movies.

How about putting this rpm reading thinge in the label that can only be read by a special light and when it shows you must have been ripping it instead of the slower speed of just watching it and come and take your children away. Hey, the part about taking your chidren might be nice. Just kidding.

There was the old Flexplay system, rentals you did not need to return as they became unplayable after about 48hr. This would not stop ripping, but the rumoured "plastic film" did remind me of the opaque layer in the Flexplay system.

I heard the film was an anit-scratch thing. Like you can but at walmart. I've never seen it though as I will never go into another BB as long as I live.

the only thing that would come close to copy protection would be for Blockbuster et al, to ship discs made by Memorex or CMC, ie crap media, that'd stop people, never mind all this talk of trace chips/plastic film/etc

the block already has the anti-theft plastic on they're disc it's been there for years they just put it on the top w/ a small magnet that will not let you take it out the doorthis will aften times throw the weight of the disk off but shouldn't hurt the rip process.

but I did see diana warwick & friends browsing throught the porn section They were probably trying to not look suspicious but they were staring at me awful hard hmmmm?????

C'mod guys, just like DogBomb said earlier.

If they put something on a disc to stop you from burning it, you wouldn't be able to play it either. Reading it is Reading it.

I think he was really pulling ur leg bragz.... i think dat is y dis guy "used" to work at blockbuster..... I know that blockbuster puts this transperent label on the disc with blue writing "PROPERTY OF BLOCKBUSTER ETC. ETC..." which they put on certain movies but rarely... BB puts this on the ones that is not up against the walls anymore(new movies). I know this cuz I rented Gone In 60 Seconds and da D@MN! thing had it so thank goodness to Cdcovers.cc they have labels n inserts for the new realeases and the unreleased. But yeah... I had no problem copying it nor did it self-destruct...

I'm sorry Katz I don't use Nero too much at all. I converted some VHS tapes to DVD but I use Dazzle Bridge and MyDVD from Sonic, and some other progies that I haven't used in about 8 months now! I think you should start a thread and ask for help...... there are plenty of people here to help ya! good luck.
