Hello fellow AD members,

Currently i decided to save some of my favorite movies in an avi format and store them on an external harddrive. i have tried several such as dvd2avi, winavi, all video converter, and super dvd ripper. This process has taken around 3 1/2 hours to get one movie to back up as avi. My dma is on, not connected to the net, firmware is up to date, firewall/ antivirus disabled...is this time normal? I have about 200 I want to back up in about a 2 month time frame. Is there a program out there that is relatively quick (i.e. dvd decrypter/ clonedvd type speeds)? Would it be faster if i ripped the movie to my harddrive first? Not sure what to do but the 3 hour encoding is a bit much for converting to avi.

to burn or not to burn that is the question

You may want to rip to harddrive and compare the time. I normally use Imtoo DVD Ripper. Takes about 1/2 to 1 hour for ripping a 2-hr. movie to hd as AVI.

Try set volume size at main window to 'custom size'.

There are several shareware DVD rippers out there. I'm demoing a couple right now. I found AOA DVD Ripper did a better job transferring to AVI, and ripping audio to .wav separately.

Worked fabulously - smooth video using Directshow window. It takes a while though - slower than realtime for mpeg2 - a 5 minute video took about 15 minutes to extract. I cut a 1 minute clip to 320X240 AVI in about 1 minute (another minute or so for the .wav file). It does have an option to shutdown your PC when done for those long, overnight jobs.

It will extract full movies, chapters or clips (you set start/end/length times), and allow you to choose audio quality, AVI encoder, etc.

Here's the link: http://www.aoamedia.com/

I got the demo from tucows.com.

@ rachelliu,

Thanks but i was looking for something in the range of 1/2 to 2 hours max movie only. I have tried Im too dvd ripper, no 1 dvd ripper and cannot get it down to 1 file at or around 700mb. So i have using DVD Decrypter in ifo mode and auto gk to backup but its like 3-4 hours encode time. I have over 236 movies I wish to turn to AVI cause i want to carry them with me on an external drive. Thanks for the suggestion but i was looking for speed and the ability to do several jobs like queing.
