dvd drive wont recognise cds

my pc is about 14 months old and has an atapi dvd dual 4xmax drive , which has been working fine for burning both dvds and cds. now all of a sudden , it doesnr recognise cds- blank , data or audio, but still plays and burns dvds.have done normal checks and all seems ok. can anybody help?

My pc has about the same age and the same problem. I'm using a sony dvd+/- rewriter. If only somebody has an idea if this is a hard or a softwareproblem. Would be very grateful.
