Hey everyone

I was reading some posts about port forwarding on here but I could use some more explanation.

There are 2 torrent sites that I frequent. Usually my download speeds aren't bad, but my upload speeds are horrible! My connection has potential to go as high as 90kb/s upload but this only happened a couple times when I was downloading torrents that had like 500 people on it (god of war and GTA san Andreas). Anyways, usually my upload on these sites goes at about 10-15kps.

I don't understand why my uploads are going so slow. I know the basics to port forwarding is that it opens ports for traffic to get through. I know how to open ports on my linksys wireless router. I guess I'm not sure as to what ports I should open, or does opening ports even make a difference on my upload speeds?

Now my other question...I read on another page that certain programs have common ports. Why do they have common ports? and should I open these in my router? What will happen if I open other ports instead of these common ports? Will it cause my speeds to suck ass?

Last question; a little while ago I got a message from my ISP threatening to suspend my service if I didn't stop downloading pirated stuff (the ISP is rogers and I am in canada). My brother had downloaded something and in this email they showed the program he used and what program it was. How can I make it so that the ISP cannot detect what I am downloading or is that possible?

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the help. There's a lot of smart people here and I would love the chance to learn more about this. It's all very frustrating when you don't know much about this shit and it feels so much better after learning about something you didn't know originally.

Ok I was just talking to my friend and he was explaining port forwarding to me in more detail.

So after hearing his explination port forwarding doesn't seem to have anything to do with upload or download speeds. He also said if you have something called DMZ enabled on your pc (which I do) it's pointless to do port forwarding. That makes sense.

I still can't figure out why my upload speeds are so shitty though. Even when I send a file over MSN or trillian or whatever to my friends the upload speed goes so slow....maybe 15kb/s. SHould go faster than that.

Ports do effect the download speed but they are not the sole deciding factor. It is also the location you are getting the files from.

"IF" you have, let's say, cable internet and "IF" I have dial up and you connect to me for a file transfer; the transfer to you will be slow regardless of the port issue. WHY?? I would only be able to upload at a certain speed because I have dial up. Make Sense so far. There are several factors included besides that. If it's via FTP, my PC to your PC via a sofware (i.e. FlashFXP), your PC to a torrent but there are few seeders and a lot of leechers (your speed will be slow). Let's say that same torrent situation and the seeders are high and only a few leechers, you may get pretty decent speeds. One more and I'll stop. Same senario, the torrent situation and let's say there are 70 seeders and 12 leechers but, all the seeders have dial up...see what I'm trying to say. I hope that sheds a little light on the subject.

Check out my tutorial. There is a link on my signature.

I realize what you're saying man and logically that makes perfect sense. I don't see any other way that it could work. I just wonder why my speed is so crapy all the time. As I type this I am uploading a 10GB file of all the Gundam Seed episodes on mininova. My upload rate is about 16kb/s. Now I can potentially go up to 90kb/s. Now in Azureus it says under leechers 0(64) and under seeders it says 78(461). Now I'm guessing the ones in brackets are the totals for the torrent and the ones outside is who is connected to me. And if that's the case there should be 78 ppl connected to me. So I'm thinking "If I have 78 ppl on me downloading I should be going alot higher than 17kb/s for upload". They can't all have shitty connections. There would have to be some guys in there that are pulling good speeds. That's what throws me off. Unless I haven't configured something in Azureus properly...

I'm feel bad you're going through he%% there man. If you'd take my advice, I say use Bit Tornado. If I remember right, I think it uses ports 10000-10004. There are alternatives as well, ports that is.
Download it, install it, open those ports, forward them to your router and then give it a try. Just my two cents. It's obvious that the program just isn't working for you. I gave up on eMule over a year ago because I just had no luck.

Can't be any worse, right??? Just try it.

I used to use Bit Tornado and I recently found out there was ad-ware in some of the versions. And when I use it I get some kind of error when I try to close the program. That's why I switched to Azureus. But even with Bit Tornado the speeds were still the same.

I actually seem to get better speeds on emule :)

Plus I have all my ports open right now anyways so I'm wide open. Don't really like that but I have no choice. When I just start opening ports then my internet runs like shit.

I think Rogers internet service is just fucked up!
