Just got a brand new Dell 9100 p4 3.0 GHZ with 4 gigs (yes 4 gigs) of RAM. I figured this baby would flat out scream but, it seems I have a setting or set up issue.

Both drives are set to cable select. Both drives are set to DMA if available however, my burner is burning at PIO mode. I miraculously figured this out when my 16x Pioneer DV-09 was indicating a 12x burn but, it was taking 55 minutes to burn..and still is.

In my device manager both drives are connected to a single Primary IDE channel. If I recall correctly, my computers in the past had a secondary IDE channel as well, but now I am uncertain or if that even has any bearing on the problem.

So I suppose my question is: How to I force the burner into DMA mode, even when it indicates DMA if available and the "auto detection" feature is greyed out and unable to be changed? Do I need to put the drives on different IDE cables? This is the way it was configured from Dell, I just switched out their OEM burner for my Pioneer and their DVD ROM for my Lite On.

Any help from the experts would be greatly appreciated, I tried to be as specific as I could.

Hi there,

Here's a quick guide on how to force DMA mode back on:

Start with this, and let us know if you still have issues.

Now it is worse. Originally the ROM drive was set to DMA and the burner was on Ultra. This allowed for sprredy ripping and dog ass slow burning. I had tried to uninstall and reinstall the DVD burner but, that didnt work so when I noticed your link suggested I uninstall the entire channel I did it.

Now BOTH drives are locked to PIO and my ripping and burning are both dog ass slow.

Your guide has made it worse. Any way to correct it or at least get my ripper back to speed?

firmware is current and they are set to cable select so master and slave settings do not apply.

Does anyone know if I can or should use different IDE channels or change the cables they are on

You may need to update drivers for your motherboard. Go the the motherboard chipset website and look for any drivers. My Pioneer was locked at 1.9x before I did some updating and I could not even play factory pressed DVDs. Also, it did not efficiently use its buffer.

You stated you got your reader back to DMA by uninstalling it. Have you tried this with the IDE controllers?? Find them in your device manager and remove both IDE channels from the list. Then re-boot and Windows should reinstall them in DMA mode. It won't hurt to remove the drive thats in PIO mode also at the same time and have Windows reinstall it also.

This thing is that windows will use generic drivers for the controllers, but you can downlad the real thing if you look. I am pretty sure that is the problem. Try uninstalling and see if Windows fixes the problem , but it might not.

This is a problem that as of know cannot be fixed. I have spend 4 hours troubleshooting it myself and onother 7 1/2 on the phone with Dell, no good.

Basically, the 9100 has only 1 IDE channel, no secondary. Device 0 can get DMA regardless of what drive is put on it. For example..if I connect a ROM or a RW drive on that channel, it will transfer automatically at DMA. On the second device (device 1) no matter what is connected will only transfer at PIO.

I have uninstalled each drive and IDE channel over 50 times. I have tried swapping the drive locations. I have tried changing the jumper pins from CS to master and slave. I have tried editing keys in the registry. I have even looked in the BIOS, whihc is where I feel the problem lies, and still no luck.

The morons at Dell told me to do a complete reinstall and wipe out my HD in order to get DMA back on..not happening. Now the latest is a motherboard swap, whihc I feel will do nothing, but thats the way it goes.

Still looking for some help if anyone has any. THX

Only one IDE channel? I have to assume that this PC is set up like most others and does have two IDE channels, primary and secondary.

If it is then:

Your hard drive is connected to the primary IDE channel, your optical drives are connected to the secondary.

You stated:

"I just switched out their OEM burner for my Pioneer and their DVD ROM for my Lite On".

That would be correct. These drives would both be installed on the secondary IDE buss, one drive located at the end of the cable, the other located at the middle.

This is a typical configuration:

The drive located at the end of the cable should have the jumper set to Master, the one connected to the middle connector should have the jumper set to Slave.

Verify that you are not installing your drives on the same cable that the hard drive is on. The same jumper settings apply to your HDD. If it is installed at the end of the IDE cable then it should be set to Master.

Here is a similar problem with a Dell and and the eventual resolution:

No, I have only ONE IDE drive. The new Dell 9100 dual core machines do not have a secondary IDE cable.

As such, setting them to cable select automatically configures teh slave/master but, I have tried your suggestion as well to no avail. Any combination of master/slave/cable select does not get the second device into DMA.

I had a similar problem with a Plextor burner. After many fustrating days/hours I found the problem was caused by certain software I had installed. If I remember correctly it was Alcohol120% and CloneDVD that were causing the issue. The problem seemed to stem from the fact that these apps created virtual drives and added their own drivers to the burner. Uninstalling these apps cured the problem for me. Its worth a shot!

PROBLEM SOLVED

First off a big thanks to Fasfrank for that link. It was not the solution to my problem but, it got me thinking out of the box.

I knew the problem lied in the BIOS but, it also lied in the positioning of the drives.

To cut to the chase..it is IMPOSSIBLE in this situation to put the slower drive or the ROM drive at device 0, it must be set to device 1 and the RW must be at the 0 position. As the linkindicated, certain DELLS will not allow the slower drive to be at the master or 0 position, only the fast RW can be.

If that was the only problem, it would have been solved with a drive swap, that wasnt the only problem.

In the BIOS, drive 5 is disabled and drive 3 is enbabled. Drive 3 is where Dell is configured to look for the optical drive but, it isnt there so while the device manage sees the DVD drive and displays it, it doesnt activate it in the BIOS so it is downspeeded to PIO mode. Once the BIOS is enabled, the drive is wide open to DMA.

In conclusion, I must thank fasfrank again for combining the drive swap with the bios enabling and disabling. I did try it just, not with the drive swapped.

So, for the kids out there who read this summary...

burner at position 0 (master position at end of IDE cable)
rom at position 1 (slave postion in middle of IDE cable)
both jumpers set to cable select
BIOS enable drive 5
BIOS disbale device 3

Have a nice day, Im goin burning!

I'm glad you got it fixed!
I've seen a few problems with Dell PCs and their penchant to install drives in the cable select mode. That is all fine and well until you try and use different drives... IMHO.

I researched this post somewhat and do know that this PC has a different, newer style form factor motherboard/case layout. BTX instead of the typical ATX form factor. I could not find any specific ATA/Atapi layout for this PC, but I did read your hard drive was serial ATA (or SATA). So the hard drive cable looks similar to this:

I was confused a bit because I have both the SATA and two IDE channels in my PC. Your PC does not need two IDE channels!
