Hi all,
I am having a problem backing up my DVD of Six Feet Under, Season 1 Disk #3.
I have tried shrink on it, no go. It gets to 100%, then says that it ran into a error problem of some kind, and has to close!! Does the same thing every time.
So I backed it up in "file format" with DVD Decryptor, that worked fine, but wont it fit on a DVD obviously. So I tried to shrink the files from DVD Decryptor with shrink, that still wont work.
I know this disk has some form of new encryption on it, and it has caused problems for others. I was just wondering if anyone has been able to back it up? And if so, exactly how did you do it?
I have read the posts I could search out on here, and a couple of people claim to have gotten past it, but they don't say HOW they did it. (One said they used VOB BLANKER, but not HOW exactly they did it.)
I am stumped, DVD43 says it has broken the protection, and DVD shrink gets to 100%, but does not include VOB #7, but I know it has one, as DVD Decryptor shows it in the file list.
Many thanks to anyone that can help me out on this.

Did you ever figure out what to do? I am having exactly the same problem. Especially annoying after I've sat here for an hour and a half on three separate ocassions trying various ways to get it to work.

same problem here.
i have been able to backup season 1 disk 1, 2, and 4, and all of season 2, but season 1 disk 3 just won't go. from what i understand there is a "jumping boy" clip in the extras of disk 3 that serves as additional protection. one way of getting around it is to set the extras to still images or remove the video all together using dvd shrink. i haven't tried this yet because i'm not interested in losing any video to bypass the protection. i want to backup my DVD exactly as it is.
so far i've tried ripping it to my hard drive with DVDDecrypter then compressing it with DVDShrink. usually when DVDShrink reaches 100% an error comes up (see below) that is a result of DVDShrink not understanding the protection code and crashing itself. i've also tried encoding directly off the original DVD into an ISO on my hard drive using DVD43 and DVDShrink. but again, when DVDShrink reaches 100% (and sometimes lower %) that same error comes up.
i plan to try AnyDVD next, and DVD Fab Decrypter after that. if anyone's tried either of these with the same result please let me know to save time. thanks.
EDIT: i just tried to remove protection from the rip on my hard drive with FreeDVD, that didn't work either.
EDIT: added pic of the errors.

I tried DVD Shrink Re-Author mode to compress each episode separately from disc 3 (so that I can use Re-Author mode and put them all back together on one disc, without menus).
I can get episode 1 and episode 3 to work. Episode 2 crashes DVD Shrink at 82% (44 minutes) of the way through.
Then I tried doing just up to chapter 5 of episode 2, which worked fine. I tried the remaining chapters, and it crashed.
So apparently there's something wrong with episode 2 82% of the way through?

I finally got it to work (without menus). Here's what I did.
First, I separately compressed (to 61%) episodes 8 and 10 to my hard drive. Then I compressed the first 5 chapters of episode 9. I closed DVD Shrink (although I also restarted my computer, I don't know if that was necessary or not). Then I opened DVD Shrink again and compressed the rest of episode 9.
After that, I used Re-Author mode to find all the parts on my hard drive, put them in the correct order, and copy them into a single directory, which I burned with Nero. Now I can just navigate to title 1 for episode 8, title 2 for episode 9, and title 4 for episode 10 (since episode 9 was split in two).

Try compressing each episode separately, like I did for S1D3. When you find one that makes the error, note the percentage finished before the error. Close and restart DVD Shrink, then compress only the chapters BEFORE the error point. Close and restart DVD Shrink again (very important), then compress the remaining chapters. Finally use Re-Author mode to put everything in the correct order, and burn the disc.

It will be cut into two separate titles, but your DVD player will automatically continue playing from the end of the first part, onto the second part, without you even noticing they were split.

ripper82,
Could you go through what you did step by step for us novices., especially how you compress chapter by chapter. never done that before. Sure would appreciate it. Thanks

Here's exactly how to copy this disc, if you're ready to stop sitting on your hands and hoping for a miracle. If you need the menus so badly, buy another set!
Step 1) Using DVD Decrypter (free), copy the entire disc to your hard drive. Open DVD Decrypter, insert the disc, then choose where you want to save the files, and click the huge Copy button.
Step 2) Open the files with DVD Shrink (free). Click Open Files and find the folder you saved the disc in. DVD Shrink will do a quick pre-analysis.
Step 3) Click the Re-Author button. Click and drag each episode from the right window to the left one. They will probably be called Title 1, Title 2, etc. but I don't remember. Just choose the ones that are each about 1 hour long.
Step 4) Click the Compression Settings tab. Click on the word DVD (on the top of the left window) and take note of the compression % on the right window. For S1 D3, it should be about 61%. Round this number DOWN a little (so if it says 61.8, round down to 61).
Step 5) Click the DVD Browser tab. Clear the left window (select all and press Delete). Now drag a single episode from the right window to the left one.
Step 6) Click the Compression Settings tab again. Chose Custom from the drop down menu, and then pull the slider to your rounded down number (61% or whatever you rounded to). Rounding down will leave some room for error.
Step 7) Click the Backup button. Choose your hard drive as the destination. Click the Quality tab and check the box for Deep Analysis. Check the box for High Quality AEC (if you desire).
Step 8) Click OK and wait for the episode to be compressed.
Step 9) When it finishes, close and reopen DVD Shrink. This is very important!
Step 10) Open the disc from your hard drive again. Click on the Re-Author tab and follow steps 5-9 for each remaining episode (saving to a new folder each time).
When an episode encounters the dreaded error, this is what you do:
Step A) Note the percentage finished when the error message appears (it was 82% for me, S1 D3 E2).
Step B) Close DVD Shrink and Reopen it! Absolutely necessary step!
Step C) Open the disc files again, click the Re-Author button, and drag over the problem episode from the right window to the left one.
Step D) Click the Compression Settings tab, choose Custom, and set the percentage appropriately. Don't forget this step!
Step E) On the top of the left window, click the Set Start/End Frames button (it looks like two vertical lines with arrows coming out of them).
Step F) Choose a chapter in the bottom drop-down menu that places the slider BEFORE the % finished when the error occured. For example, if the episode was 50 minutes long and had an error at 82% complete, choose a chapter that ends BEFORE 41 minutes. At the bottom of this window, there is a message that says "Total Duration" which will tell you where the chapter ends.
Step G) Click OK and then the Backup button. Backup the episode the same as before (steps 7-9 above).
Step H) When finished, close and reopen DVD Shrink! Necessary step! The problm seems to propogate in DVD Shrink's memory if you don't close it first.
Step I) Open the disc files again, click the Re-Author button, drag over the problem episode, click Compression Settings, choose Custom, set the %. Click the Set Start/End Frames button and choose the chapter your set before (as the end chapter) as the BEGINNING chapter. In other words, set it to the remaining part of the episode.
Step J) Click OK and then the Backup button. Backup the episode the same as before (steps 7-9 above). Be sure not to use the same folder as you used for the first part, or you'll overwrite it.
Step K) If any episodes are left to compress, do them the normal way (steps 5-10 above).
After you're finished compressing all of the episodes:
Step i) Close and reopen DVD Shrink! Click the Re-Author button. On the DVD Browser tab, navigate to the folder on your hard drive where you saved the first compressed episode. Click and drag it to the left window.
Step ii) In the right window, navigate to the next episode on your hard drive, and drag it to the right window (under the episode you already dragged over).
When you get to the split episode, simply drag over both parts, making sure to place the second half underneath the first half.
Step iii) Make sure the slider bar at the top of the DVD Shrink window shows less than 4,464MB. If it doesn't, you forgot to compress one or more of the episodes! Figure out which one and then redo it.
Step iv) Press the Backup button and choose your DVD drive as the destination. Make the temporary folder wherever you want it (be sure not to overwrite any of the compressed episodes you're using).
Now, when you play the DVD, you'll need to find the button on your remote that lets you navigate from one title to another. The split episode will have two titles dedicated to it, but they will play seamlessly past the split point.
If you can't find the title-choosing button, just press the "Next Chapter" button to skip through each episode to the next one.

Hello All,
Finally found another solution. Sorry Ripper, could not follow along with all your instructions. My fault, not yours. This way was much simpler - I downloaded a trial copy of AnyDVD and opened it and just let it sit in the background. I then fired up DVDShrink and let it do its thing as usual. No problems with the analysing and encoding. I then just used Nero the normal way and it burned just like any other DVD - no problems whatsoever and full functionality, menus, etc. Hope it works for everyone else. Please post your results.

After two days of the same problems everyone else is having with the Six Feet Under Season 1 Disc 3 disc, I finally made a copy with menus and everything...
So, this is what you need to do.... use DVD Shrink 3.17.... it's that simple.... uninstall Shrink 3.2, make sure there are no left over registry keys just to be safe and install 3.17... I can't find the site I found 3.17 for download.... but I just found it here... http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/dvdshrinkold/
I tried DVD Shrink 3.2, Nero Recode 2, using DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to my hard drive, using DVD43, using AnyDVD..... and every combination of those programs.... and everytime, DVD Shrink or Recode would crash at the very end of encoding.
So yeah, as to my exact steps towards making my copy that works....
1. I had DVD43 running in the background.
2. Used DVD Shrink 3.17 by clicking "open disc" and just going from there... did deep analysis and all that.
3. Burned with DVD Decrypter.
Just checked and the disc plays fine in two home DVD players.... but I haven't watched the whole thing all the way through yet, but seems like everything works fine.
Hope this helps everyone...

Thanks David!! I downloaded 3.1 and did the same thing, and it worked great!! (Only I put 3.1 on a external drive, so I would not have to remove 3.2 from my main C: Drive.)
I just ran DVD 43 in the background, used 3.1 to back it up, and burned it with Nero.
Thanks again, I would NEVER have thought about using an older version of the software!!
