New Hard Drive Added but having problems!

Sorry if it has been posted already...
I have an old computer with a hard drive that I want to install on this computer. This hard drive has windows XP and the other hard drive has windows 98. After I plugged in the old hard drive into this new computer, I turned on my computer but windows 98 came up. How do I make windows XP come up so I can go to DOS Promp and type in "format [letter]:". In [letter], will go the letter that represents the hard drive. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Can anyone help me out on this?

if old computer hd has win98 on it & newer computer has xp but win98 is posting instead xp than you have to change a jumper on each drive so that xp is master & win98 is slave. once that is done & can see both drives in my computer than right click the d: drive(win98). a menu comes up & click format.

What DDP suggested may only work if Windows XP is on the HD that was installed on your new PC.
It seems to me that you are trying to take out a HD from your Old computer which has Windows XP and put it into your new one with windows 98. Is this so?
If this is the case, there is a chance that Windows XP will not work. Xp is really anal about hardware changes. Make sure you do not format anything in Dos. What happens if you format the win98 drive and then XP doesn't boot?
Try what ddp suggested. If XP does not boot and you have a retail installation, then you are fine. What you do is boot the HD in the old PC and get your Windows XP key and write it down (just in case you lost your cd cover). Then you need to install the HD in the new PC. Insert your XP setup cd and start the PC. When you do the install, do a repair rather than a clean install. This will reinstall windows XP, but leave everything in tact. Also you will be able to use Windows 98 as well in a dual boot config.
I do not know how XP OEM works. Your XP key may not work. Also to get your key you need a program like Magical Jelly Bean. Oh and after you reinstall Windows XP you will have to install every update again.
You will know if there is something wrong if the XP boot fails and you get a blue screen which gives you some errors and tells you that you may have a virus and that you have to reinstall all your old hardware controllers.
If you get something like NTDLR is missing then this can be fixed.

The new comps HD (Windows XP) is in master and the old HD (Windows 98) is in slave... Let me try switching it up.
Jaguar..you got it all around :-)
What I'm really trying to do is delete everything on the old HD (Windows 98) to make it another virtual drive on my computer. You know how Local Disk is C: , CD-ROM is D: and DVD-ROM is E: and so on..
Basically, I want a have drive F: so I can store a couple of more files in that drive.
What do I do to remove Windows 98 from the old drive and make my computer load Windows XP and have the drive F: ?

Don't understand ddp. don't have that much knowledge heh.
But the comps HD(windows xp) is in master and the old HD(windows 98) is in slave.
That's all I know..

but than win98 should not display. the ide cable the 2 hds are on, is it an 80wire 40pin cable or a 40wire 40pin cable. if an 80wire cable, is the win98 hd on the middle connector or the end connector?

I switched it around and put the old HD(windows 98) in master and new HD(windows xp) in slave and windows 98 still came up.
If by the 40pin you mean that the HD has 39 pins, then yeah. Both HDs have that.
The end of the connector is connected to new HD(windows xp).
Really don't know much.

Try changing the boot sequence in bios so it boots to that hard drive and set the jumpers correctly.Can you set up a raid array on your motherboard?

um just a thought the old computers of win98 era rarely recognise a hardrive bigger than 8 gigs so if the hardrive is bigger then win98 will boot as the only harddrive

jBoRiCuA8, if you don't understand what you're being told, you have no business rewiring your harddisks. You need 'Computer 101' - a basic knowledge of Primary and Secondary controllers and the master and slave device they each can run.
Your WinXP harddisk should remain right where it is, as master on the primary controller.
The Win98 harddisk should be introduced as master on the secondary controller.
Your Rom drive should be slaved to the smaller older harddisk on the secondary controller.
Make sure upon reboot that the two HDs and the Rom drive are detected properly by your rig's BIOS. They will now show up in Windows Disk Manager - identify them by Volume Label.
There may be many small partitions on your older Win98 HD - bust 'em out if req'd using Disk Manager.
Format 1 big partition on the disk from within Disk Manager; reboot.
You can now move your WinXP swapfile to the second HD and realize improved performance.
This configuration works when reading/writing from the Rom drive goes to/from your C:\ drive (they are on different controllers).
If you don't understand what we're telling you, you need to find yourself a PC Tech, hopefully at least A+ Certified...

so that was what the picture was on the other site. the print was to small to read & understand. thought it waspart of the site. do it with that arrangement of the drives & cables. are the 2 ide cables made the same or does ide1 cable has finer wires compared to ide2?
