Hey all im new Names Satanstheory - Theory for short. Wondering if i could find anyone with any moniter repair expirence. I recently Tried to rewire and splice a Vga End on my cord cause some of the pinns were broken off. Its a old compaq 17in moniter. I provided some pictures of what i have done i just used electircal tape to keep the wiries togther for now.. Till i found out if it was gonna work. But its still not working.
One of the pins broke off on my moniter. I had it plugged into a extension thing cause i knew the pins were really easy to bend and duck tapped it.. Well i firgured i would cut it and put a new end on it.. So i cut it and cutt the female end off the extesion it had alot more wires then the Moniter. But i attached all the collored wires togther that mathched they were. Green,Orange,Red,Black,Grey,White ,Yellow,Blue,White/Red,... Left over on the cored are Brown,Pruple,baby blue,Purple/White,Black/White.
Maybee the wire colors dont matter not sure. but it was a intresting project cant seem to find much text on the matter... Well thanks alot if u need any more pictures that would help out let me know.

do you have a multi-meter or can borrow 1. also do you still have the original bad end as going to need it with the multi-meter to find out what color wires goto what pins. i do this all the time.

I really wish i did and no i dont have the old end i believe i threw it away... I dunno my dad might have a multi meter what exactly does it do. and is it impossible to do without the old end?

it makes it alot harder to figure out as 2 of those wires are your vertical & horizontal sync. there should be 3 fat wires that are red, green & blue. those are actually shielded wires. the center wire goes to pin 1, 2 or 3 depending on the color. the shield wires goes to pin 6, 7 or 8 depending on the color as they are ground. here is the pinout to a standard vga connector. on the cable connector is marked pin 1, 5, 6, 10, 11 & 15. use the multi meter set for ohms or continuity on the extension cable & write down what each color wire to what pin as they are not standardized.
vga connector pinout
pin1 red
pin2 green
pin3 blue
pin4 nc
pin5 ground
pin6 red ground
pin7 green ground
pin8 blue ground
pin9 nc
pin10 digital sync ground
pin11 nc
pin12 nc
pin13 horizontal sync
pin14 vertical sync
pin15 nc

Ok now when your talking about pins you mean from left to right top to bottom? Like the top left pin is pin 1 then 2 ,3 ect..?

check on the bottom of the connectoe where the pins are & you should see those numbers i posted. might need a magnify glass to see them.

Ok i got the read out of the wires.. Now when you mean Group for 5-8 pins what color are they usally along with 10,13,14
If it helps any im using a 17 Inch Compact Moniter. The older systle that came with the 500mzh machines.

do you have 3 thick wires in that cable from the monitor because they are shielded cables. the inner core goes to 1 of the 1st 3pins that are red, green or blue. the outer part is the shield, that goes to pins 6,7,8 depending on which pin the inner core goes to. pin 10 is usually black but not always. pins 13 & 14 can be yellow or white & not in that order. that is were the broken connector would have come in to tell you what color wire goes to what pin. i have found sometimes on the circuit board in the monitor were the cable is attached to, printing that states what each wire is BUT CAUTION as there is 20,000 volts in there even when unplugged.

I've been inside the moniter before.. Where exactly would it be located inside the moniter once the cables go inside the moniter the cords brance off into 3 differnt connectors on the inside.

That still leaves me with 3 wires orange,small red(non grounded),grey.

on the circuit board by the connectors but no guarrantee it will be there as some manufacturers do & some don't print on the boards what each wire does.

attached all wires pluged in still no video.. if the white and yellow wires are mixed up would that provide no video? and could it be one of the 3 missing wires

how many wires on the monitor cable & how many wires on the extension cable?? on the red, green & blue wires, how many wires are attached to each color?

All the red green and blue wires are attached to each other the Extension cable has 15 wires and the moniter cable has moniter has 8 i belive red orange and grey are the ones from the moniter cable that are not connected to anything.

Well i have no idea from the moniter cable.. But i can tell you the ones from the Extension cables pinns. and they would be Pins 4,5,9,10,12,15 are empty they have no wires connected to them

Just noticed i had pin 10 mixed up with something else.. Gonna try it now. So 10 is connected now 11 isnt

Im getting a picture its very very dark it shows like thier is no signal when i hit the menu button it lights up gren and says video cables connected? No signal

are you certain you have red as pin 1 & red ground is pin 6 & same with the other colors to their pins also try switching 13 & 14. make certain pin 10 is not empty as it is ground maybe for pin 13 & 14.

Tried all that still getting the idle light then when i hit menu it comes up dark and says Moniter connected? No signal.
