Okay I got a good question. I got a pavilliona721n with a pentium 2.80 ghz. Its like a late 2004...early 2005 comp. Anyway..this doesnt come with a floppy drive. Now I want to know how do I hook up a floppy to it. Also..I have a little one gig hardrive laying around formatted to ntfs with partiton magic. I want to know how can I add these to the comp. I mean..I know how to install them, but there doesnt apear to be jumpers for it. Theres a power jumper off the main samsung 160 gig hardrive...but no data cables for neither. Just one big cable running from the hardrive to mobe to cd drive..then dvd rw drive. I believe....but not sure...the same cable attaches to the camera memory slots. So what do I have to do install this? I want to use this gig as a page file and maybe some small audio clips. Eventually I plan on getting another hard drive.just for movies. So I can convert movies and save them to the second hard drive. Or dvds..whatever. I hear this was faster.so this is why want to do it? So can anyone help.

Also I got one last question. I got a samsung hardrive as I said. This is the weird thing. Sometimes when I ut a big load on it....saying using divx to dvd.....it squeals. Almost like a fan belt on a car. (sorry for the comarison, but im a mechanic by trade.lol.) So what would cause this? Drive dying or something?

Thanks for all your help. Best wishes.ozzy (not the real one..lol)

what is the actual model # with the proper spacing as what you posted according to hp does not exist. you will need a new cable to hook up that 1 gig drive & why use ntfs format on 1 gig as it is a waste.

Here you go ddp..i am deeply sorry. HP Pavilion a712n Desktop

I mistyped it. I only did it in ntfs..because everywhere I look on the net everyone seems to say its better than fat system. No other reason for this. Also I do have a cable for this, but not sure if its the one I need. Its only about 8 inches and what came with the hardrive. It's a seagate drive model st31013a. Right now I have the drive configured for cable select, but like I said I have no idea how to jumper this to the mobo or even if cable select is the right setting. BTW..there is no splitter on the cable that came with drive...just in and out.

P.s,,,,If ya wondering where I got this drive...it came out of a webtvplus I had before the pc and I confirmed it works with pc. A buddy hooked it into his c and formatted it...it ran fine lol. But he never bother to show me how to hook it up.lol

need a 34 pin data cable for the floppy drive besides the small 4 pin cable from the psu. you have 2 ide ports, primary & secondary that can handle a total of 4 ide drives. each ide cable has 3 connectors on it, 1 to the motherboard & 2 to the ide drive. the cables can be a 80 wire 40pin connector or a 40 wire 40pin connector. check to see what drives are on what ide ports & what the jumper configuration is either on the bottom of the drive or the back of the drive as in master, slave or cable select. check this link to your motherboard layout.

Wow I looked on hp and never thought they would have a pic of the mobo. So basically I just got to get another dual cable like they have for the main hardrive. Okay now is this going to be plug and play or am I going to have to get a set up disk for the hardrive? Also where and what is a good way to mount the hardrive in the case? Just get a few self tappers and screw it into the wall? (sorry me thinking like a mech again...lmao)

Thanks so much for your time ddp.

Hey I got another quick question. I dont even know why Im bother cause I already know the answer. Im going to need the original set up disks for the os, but here it goes. I had a major virus infection. So I had do a wipe and clean install. I didnt have the original setup disk laying round.so I used another from another hp com. Now the graphics seemed to be fine, but windows update said that there was no driver for the graphics and offered a download. So I took it. Now the graphics are hard to see. I have to set it at 800 x 600....before all this happened I was running at the highest pixel.something like 1280 x 1024 and everything was perfect. Im guessing I got the wrong driver or something. I even tried downloading the one from hp. Is there a way to fix this or am i going to need the restore discs to do it right?

Edit..I just looked in the case. They got the two ides filled up. Theres is one with no jumers going straight from mobo to hard drive. Its labled as master. The other one is slave which runs from mobo with two jumpers to the cdrom and dvd drives. So what do I do? Replace the mobo going to the hardrive with a splitter variety?

you need 6-32 1/4" long screws to hold the 2nd hd. you need another cable like that of the rom drives. set the 2nd hd as slave by the jumper as same with the 1st hd as master. hp link for your drivers http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?dlc=en&tool=softw...

Okay ddp...thanks so much for your info and time. I greatly apprecite it. Now I got one final question. The original hard drive in my comp was jumpered to cable select. I removed the jumper and set it to main. Then I used the small one gig hardrive and had it jumpered to slave. Windows would boot up fine and the bios recognized it. These are all on the same ide channel. Now this problem. I got another drive that was a 80 gig and only 6 months old. A samsung sp0802n. I tried doing the same. The main with windows xp (the 160) to master and the 80 to slave. Now windows wont boot up and it seems sluggish. So I disconnected the 80 and then windows booted up fine. Now do I have a bad drive or are the jumpers wrong? I did try leaving both in cable select, but it keep trying to boot from the slave even know I had the 180 set to boot first. So what do i do? Or is the samsung 80 gig bad?

Sounds like the 80 gig is bad, unplug the other hard drive and try it with just the 80 to see if it boots. Also, if you got your floppy drive installed, many hard drive manufacturers have floppy-bootable diagnostic programs on their websites that will check the drive for errors for you.

No I dont have the floppy installed yet. But I was using the ultimate boot disc which has samsung disc manager on it. According too all the tests with the manager the drive was fine. It had disc read errors...spin up/down tests and a error checkor. Plus someything else. Thats why Im wondering since before I starting messing round...the original oem drive was set to cable select. If the other one has to be on cable select. But the funny thing is if I do that then it trys to boot from the 80 not the 160. I even tried switching cables to make sure the 160 was the first channel and the 80 was second channel...since the cable I got isnt marked master...slave or nothing.1

ddp.do you mmean instead of putting all hardrives on one ide port and all the rom drves on another like factory.put one on one and the other on the other? Then just have each rom drive on a seperate ide.

Ahh.ok. Guess I will go buy another cable then, because the factory cable on the roms wont reach to configure it like that. Luckily its only twelve dollars for a cable.lol. One thing I dont understand though is..if you put both hardrives on master wont it try to boot from the one that is blank or is there a way to configure it in the bios?

I dont know bout the factory cable that is in there for the rom drives, but the one I got for the hardrives is a cobra ata 133 ide 80 conductor 40 pin cable. So yes 80 wire 40 pin i guess. I just going to have to get a different power lead for this too....because the factory setup wires aint set u to do this. Once I get it done I basically set the 160 for primary in the bios right?

can get splitters so that 1 end from psu fits into & the other ends fits into the drives. me, i make my own from duff psu's & connectors off old heat sink fans for 486s & p1's.

10guage is kinda thick, more likely 18-20ga. remember yellow is 12volts, black is ground & red is 5volts. mix them up & you'll have scrap metal.

lol.yeah true. Maybe 10 guage is a litte thick..he he. As my dad always taught me...overdo things and ya can never go wrong...lmao.
Thanks ddp..i really appreciate all your insight and help. Its not often when you find someone willing to take time out of their day to help.

I did get it running for now with the 80 gig. I just elimated one of the roms till I square away the power cords. I will say this to everyone else. Be careful how ya hook it up if you try it. I hooked it up and couldnt even get into bios. What hapened is the cable I bought wasnt marked master or slave on either side. So when I hooked it up...the connections were reversed. So I switched it round and it booted right up. And here I thought the 80 gig was bad...lol.

EDIT..the only thing I cant figure out is windows run fine...but when you first start it up..it takes like a couple minutes to come up and then its fine....before it was like 30 secs... What could cause this?
