A thread on this topic in DVD-R for Newbies was posted last September, but had no replies. I'd like to give it a try here:

I've successfully used DVD-RW for movies, but if I try to erase (Nero) or format(Prassi) a disk , the DVD-RW is left with a "Track01.cda" file on it, making the computer think it's a music CD and renders it unusable for further burning. The .cda can't be removed, so the thing's useless. My burner's a Pioneer DVR-103.

Is it possible that just erasing the files using Windows Explorer will take care of the problem? I won't be able to do that until I feel like ruining another DVD-RW.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Um, is this one of those taboo questions? Is it too dumb to be considered? It got no response some time back over in the newbie forum, now none here.

Would one of the gurus please step in here and say "I don't know.", if that is indeed the case? Or better yet, someone else who's not a guru, step in and say "Yeah I've been wondering the same thing."

Let's hear a little chatter out there!

I cannot give you a definative answer however relating to the track01.cda problem.

I too have this problem after formatting a dvd-rw with nero, but I CAN use the disc again.

I think the o/s is the problem because if you look at a BLANK dvd-rw u can see (what looks like a track)is a different shade to the rest of the disc.

I have been trying to find out WHAT this area is but to know avail.

I'll go out on a limb here and give u my theory on what it is.

I think it is the area which is used to CLOSE a dvd, as it is present on all balnk dvd-r or rw.

After burn if u CLOSE the dvd then this area is gone!!!!!

The dvd-r does not display the track01.cda even though this area is the same as the rw, so I believe it is down to the o/s, being able to say on a blank dvd-r that there is no disc and on a dvd-rw not being able to say there is no disc there and detecting the area as above as a POSSIBLE track but unable to determine what.

Let me know what u think!

Hopefully some of the guru's can look at this and give a definative answer and say whether I am right or wrong.

Or indeed sniffing at coffin varnish!!!!!!

Hmmm, that's interesting. How do you format a DVD-RW with Nero? I've used "erase rewritable media" (or however it's worded), but I haven't found a true "format" command. Are "erase" and "format" functional equivalents in Nero?

I can't use my RWs again because Nero returns a "can't begin Disk-at-once writing" error. I'd love to get to the bottom of this.

Thanks for replying. I was beginning to think I was alone in the world. What you suggest as the reason for that .cda file makes sense, but I know little about the technical track specifications of DVDs. General use DVD-R/RWs preclude access to the areas of authoring DVD's lead-in tracks, or some such thing, and I wonder if that has anything to do with it all.

I asked the same question regarding the 'true' format command and basically there isn't.

I select erase rewritable.

Then Full erase rewritable.

This works for me with verbatium dvd-rw.
I must admit this problem has not occured recently and I know I haven't had any nero updates since.

Also what version of nero r u using, I use 5.5.9.17?

I'm using Nero 5.5.7.8. maybe that's the problem. I haven't upgraded for a while. Prassi does the same thing to me though, so maybe the disk is fine and I'm doing something wrong during the write phase.I'll see if I can get an update.

I've seen others refer to DVD+RW as not having this problem, but they're a bit more dough. If you can reuse them, then the price really doesn't matter, does it?

Interior, day: Oldmike's ofice, two hours later.

Oldmike: HA -- HAAAAAA!! Baabaa, you hit the nail right on the thumb! It was indeed the old version of Nero I was using. I downloaded Nero 5.5.10.something (the newest) and installed it, then reformatted a DVD-RW I'd given up for lost. As I speak (type), it's sitting over there happily getting written to. I'm trying an experiment with DVD2one -- got it yesterday, full version -- which, by the way, so far appears to be FANTASTIC. Worth every dime, and on my 119" 16x9 LCD projector I can barely tell the difference. I'm going to drop a comment or two over in the DVD2one forum so I don't get too far off topic here.

See? Two heads can sometimes be nearly as good as one. High five, pal. You've been a big help, even though the solution was simple.

Cheers Oldmike, nice to see u sorted it,

Sometimes those dam trees just hide the woods.

I think you'll enjoy dvd2one, though it does have quality issues (people have said) I can see quality issue on 28" widescreen but it is VERY VERY MINOR, it is acceptable for me anyway for my own purposes.

Regards
