My computer has been running kinda sluggish lately and I noticed that explorer.exe is using 112K to 114K with nothing else opened. The highest process after that is 39.5K.
Is there anyway to get this number lower???

114Kb IS nothing...
If your computer is running slow try to search for viruses, adware, and spyware.
If you don't have any virus detectors installed, download AVG Free 7 and scan your computer...its free and one of the best virus apps.
Then scan for adware. Download Adaware Personal (also free). It does a great job at finding adware.
Finally install Spybot Search & Destroy (free as well.) It will hunt for spyware.
You can find all of these at download.com.

I have ran norton and adaware and that didnt help at all. I will try Spybot and see what happens but I doubt it will find anything new.

I wouldn't use norton. I used to think it was really good, and used to use it for years. Then people here like ddp turned me onto AVG. Norton uses a lot of resources compared to AVG. I was having some problems with my computer at the time, so I took ddp's suggestion, uninstalled norton, and ran AVG. Right away it found 7 viruses that had been there for a long time...two were trojan horses! On top of that, AVG is free!
Just a suggestion...
AVAST is also a good anti-virus app, also free.
You can also try Ccleaner to clean your registry and other temp folders and whanot, you might just have a bunch of extra crap slowing it down...what are the specs of your computer?

Intel Pentium 4 2.40 with 2GB memory. I think I will try that AVG because norton does use alot of resources. I also ran registery first aid and it cleans up quite a bit of stuff everytime, especially after ripping and burning dvd's.

Well just realy slow encoding and the whole system just seems to be dragging. I just uninstalled norton and my explorer.exe is down to 40K so that will help alot. AVG is running right now, BUT since I uninstalled norton I am getting a security message saying no firewall is installed. I do no have much experience with firewalls and what is a good one or not. Any ideas????

what windows do you have? If you have XP with service pack 2, it comes with a built in firewall. However its not the greatest. A really good free one is Zone Alarm. You can also find it at download.com. There's also a pro version, but the basic rree version is all you need. Its a great firewall because you tell it which programs can access the internet only.

Someone else on here said they use McAfee 2005 v7 RETAIL. Have you heard anything about it? Like I said I have never looked for a firewall so I am kinda new at it.

well McAfee is kinda like Norton, its an all-in-one app that also uses a lot of resources. I've heard its better than norton, but the best firewall out there is definately Zone Alarm. Do a google search on it, you should find plenty of details about it

For some reason ever since I added zone alarm and AVG my internet connection seems to lose its connectivity when it is idle for a little bit. Is one of these programs doing this and can I stop it?

make sure you let zone alarm give internet access to AVG as well. Be sure to click the "remember this program" button so it won't ask you everytime a program tries to get access to the internet
