I am using the Sony DRX-710UL on a Mac. It says that it is only comapatible with DVD+R DL media. I have seen where others have been able to get other Sony's to burn DVD-R DL. I was wondering if anyone new if the DRX-710UL could be made to burn DVD-R DL? The only reason I am looking to do this is that I am using the Denon 3910 home dvd player, and I think that it will only read DVD-R.

Check out this site:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=denon+3910&Submit...

Other people have had success playing dvd +r dual layer media on the denon 3910 player. It's got DVD-R Dual layer as questionable.

I also checked out your burner at videohelp.com and many people had to update the firmware.

I think there needs to be some serious myth debunking here...

Compatibility has NOTHING to do with the format of the media. There is NOTHING inherent in the dash format to make it more compatible than plus. The ONLY reason DVD-R is more compatible than DVD+R is that it's been on the market much longer so there are more players that know how to handle it. That's it. There's no magic in the format. Likewise, DVD+R DL is generally MORE compatible than DVD-R DL because, well, +R DL has been around longer than -R DL!

As a result, there is really NO reason to use DVD-R DL. It's less compatible (both player and burner-wise), tends to be a bit more expensive, and can't using bitsetting (which is an extra ace up +R DL's sleeve that boosts +R DL's compatibility to close to 100%). -R DL exists only to save the dash camp from political embarrassment.
