First, what gives with all the configuration?

I got into the P2P world, by first using Kazaa years ago, dropped them, and went to Limewire. Limewire is ok, but recently been getting alot of porn results no matter what search I do. When I am d-loading from limewire, I get d-laods averaging about 30 kps, min 10, max 70 to 80. Heck, sometimes I'd get 30 kps on multi downloads. I've had to do very little configuring for limewire, but as I said, with the amount of porn, dead files, corrupted files, and just, crappy search results, I wanted something more.

So about a year ago, I was told about Bittorrent. D-loaded it, and whoa!! Loved it! All I had to do, was find a torrent I liked, and d-load, no problems.

Had to go offline for a few months (took a temp job in a foreign country) and I get back about two weeks ago, and bam!

I go to look for some torrent, and, wait, what is this..I need to d-load additional clients now? What's that all about? What the heck is a bitlord, bitcomet and azureus? I start doing some research, and figure, ok, I'll try one of them. I still don't understand why I can't d-laod torrents with just regular ole bittorrent anymore, but heck, I'm always willing to try a new thing.

So, first I try, Bitlord....ewww
your d-laod will take 99 days, 99 hours, 99 minutes, 99 seconds.. AT A WHOPPING D-LOAD SPEED OF 1KBS!...wtf?

Ok, time to get rid of bitlord.

Onto Bitcomet....same damn thing!!

Now I try Azureus. Ok, got d-loads of about 20 kbs....hmph, slower then limewire and regular bittorrent. So I do some searching, and find this forum, with loads of topics, describing the same exact problems I have. Yellow faces, slow speeds, and these mysterious port settings.

After countless reading, I'm still where I was at the beggining. I am basically computer illiterate. So, I don't know how to open ports, I think this is my problem, since I keep getting nat error, nat error, nat error.

My d-load faces are yellow, but the upload faces are blue and yellow.

I found my way over to that open port site, everyone here recomends, but I found no directions, on how to open port..ie: where do I find the ports? What folders do I have to go into?

I am using a westell 2200 dsl modem, speed is about 340. verzion for dsl acess, and aol for broswer. I have no router, and I am using the free version of zone alarm.

So, can someone please explain to me how to do this? To borrow a line from Denzel W, explain this to me, like I am an 8 year old.

Now unrelated to that. Why all the different clients? What happend to make people stop using regular bittorrent?

Since bittorent has become more popular programs like to "Improve". Most people find that alternative bittorent clients allow for more advanced features and custome settings.

If you don't have a router you don't need to open ports unless your using a firewall then you need allow bittorent through the firewall.

Its not uncommon for downloads to start really slow. Usually after awhile the signal becomes stronger and more users come online bring it up to a reasonable speed.

You could try BearShare. I find it works well.

Bittorent uses port 6999 (something close to that at least) other programs allow you to choose the ports the program is to use.
