I ganna update me pc to a amd athlon 64 bit in the next 2 weeks i was woundering if there is anything i should know about it befor i go out and but it Thankz For any help Phoenix21

chaintech makes great boards too.... i have a chaintech board, and a amd athlon 64 3200+, and it runs great!!!!!! this board supports my full 2000mhz frontside bus.... one of the onlyboards i found that did when i got mine....

Definately look at ASUS the boards are very quick and reliable, with usually easy setup and good overclocking capability. There are several options to look at firstly the Athlon 64 dual core or single core 939, then the 754 pin as these only have the 130nm core instaed of 90nm which means they run hotter and thus can't be clocked as hard. You could also look at the FX chips or Opteron, but beware of the need to use registered memory on the 940 pin. Basically get the best you can afford, or at least make sure the MB can support what you would ideally like to end up with and get a lower spec CPU etc... but don't waste money on a cheap PSU.

ok say im ganna use the computer mostly for gaming witch one would ya recommend,Asus sounds good for the board but im still not sure bout the cpu, The cpu i got now it good but it heats up to much and i don't wanna have 2 many fans in my computer, but the cpu gets up to over 60c and then it shuts off and its really getting anoying, i can't play many games cause it keeps overheating.

I'm using the 940 pin FX53 CPU with a Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 CPU Cooler on the ASUS SK8V, this is a very quiet cooler an keeps CPU down to above 45 degrees even when gaming, but I do have loads of fans in large case as well. Can definately recommend the AMD's for gaming, they appear to beat Intels hands down. If your not looking at the latest cutting edge for the sake of it, then these processors are now quite cheap compared to what they were, and are more than capable. Some of the newer CPU's do however have the 90ns core which runs cooler. My next rig will be using a dual core CPU, but that is still some way off, as my present system still flies on all the applications I chuck at it. I also have a P4 3.2 Ghz rig, but compared to the AMD it just can't keep up.My Rig Asus SK8V MB, FX53 CPU, 2GB Corsair Twin X regecc mem (4x 512), ATI X800XT PE, 4x WD Raptors 74Gb Raid 0+1 HDD, onboard sound, Xaser 3 case and Antec 550W true power PSU, 2 x NEC ND 3540A DVD-RW, Maxtor 160GB External drive. Will soon update to Win XP64 but not enough drives available yet, but this again will give the system good boost in speed hopefully.

Hey. Is there a way you can tell the true speed of an AMD processor?? I was trying to get a 3Ghz Athlon 64 3000+ processor and when I put it in and checked the speed, it said 2Ghz. I'll have to make do with it for now, but can anyone give me a few tips on buying a 3 gig processor. Any help appreciated. Thanks a ton!!!!!!

your 3000+ is the equivalent to a p4 3ghz but running at 2ghz. to get a 3ghz amd, you will need to get a 5000+ which i doubt they sell yet

then what's the highest you can get? I'm just curious.... also, how much faster will progs like Halo and Battlefield 1942 run if i get Windows 64-bit version??? how much is that running anyway?? I'm kinda new to this and don't really have a big budget at the moment. Thanks for the help!!!

The fastest clock speed of an AMD is the FX57 939. It runs at 2.8Ghz. I would still go for the 4800+ though, it has dual core processors which both run at 2.4 GHz.

They will run together working on seperate applications. The AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-core processors contain two processing cores, residing on one chip, that perform calculations on two streams of data, thereby increasing efficiency and speed while running multiple programs and the new generation of multi-threaded software.

what would y'all suggest for a pc that wouldn't be too expensive. I already have a 256MB AGP graphics card and an 80GB hard drive, which I haven't filled up yet.

If you went for the following Motherboard and CPU it will set you up for 64 bit computing if you want to go that way, and will get you a good all round processor. You'll still be able to use your graphics card presuming it is AGP. The CPU has the 90nm core so will run cooler than the 130nm cores and will aid overclocking if you want to increase the performance. You can both of these new for under £200 in the UK. AMD (Winchester) Athlon 64bit 3200+ 939pin, Asus A8V Deluxe Socket-939 VIA/KT800Pro. The board will also take an FX57 or 4800+ dual core cpu should you want to upgrade. If your graphic card was PCI i would have suggest the Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe. It all depends on how much exactly you want to spend, and what parts you can re-use from the old PC including memory modules & PSU.

yer me graphics is agp so i'll still use that since i just brought it anyways ram i got a 512 peg and i wanna get another one and the HDD there the only things i can really reuse im givin me motherboard and proccessor to me brother
