I burned several DVD backups using DVD Shrink and Nero 6 after I got my burner about a year ago (?) (Sony DRU-700A - firmware VY06) and was very satisfied with the results. I use Rytek 4x and 8x DVD-R media I bought from Meritline.

DVDInfo Pro data: Media code/Manufacturer ID RITEKG04.
(Windows XP Pro SP1 256MB RAM, lots and lots of hard drive space).

However, the last few DVDs I've burned all have a smattering of unreadable spots that stop playback dead in its tracks - even when playing back on the DRU 700A in my PC. I get the same results using 4x or 8x Rytek media.

So now my DVD burning has come to a standstill. I can no longer make a successful video backup. I don't know what to change or do differently and I am really frustrated at how much time I have put into making this work - only to have my process need trouble shooting again.

A few months ago, all was working great. I could rip and compress with DVD Shrink and burn good backups. Now, every single one has some number of unreadable spots that no DVD player I have (entertainment unit or in my PC) can get past. I've quit trying to make DVDs. I use my burner for data backups only.

I read a post about power supplies needing to be solid. I'm not sure what I have in my PC (Dell Dimension 4400 - 1.6GHZ Pentium).

I'm at a loss. I'd appreciate any insight into what the problem could be. I have no idea where to start looking and what to do differently. This reminds me of my first CD burner - back when it was a tricky process that ate up hours and hours of my time. The CD burning process is no longer a crap shoot, but my DVD burning experiences certainly are.

Thanks in advance,
Chuck

Look at one of the disks you burned under a VERY strong light. The film should look uniform in color. If you see dark spots or areas of discoloration on the film, it means that there was a contamination of dust or dirt between the laser lens and the disk when the burning process took place.

Do your best to clean up both the blank media and the Laser Lens, then try another burn. I recommend a WET brush lens cleaning disk if you can find one. If not, put some Ethyl Alcohol on the brushes of a dry type cleaning disk. That will work much better than a dry brush.

Dust and dirt are the number one causes of dead spots during the burning process.

If you burn with Nero, use the "Verify Burn" routine to check your disk after it has been burned. That's the very best validation you will ever find. If the disk can pass that test, it will play on ANY compatible DVD player.

wow, 256MB ram is not much.

do the firmware update, then post LAST section of your Nero log, which is in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

i can personally vouch for VY08, having done something like 1500 Verbatim's thru Nero 6.

Trouble is with burning, is even if a disc is burnt/verified 100% it isn't guaranteed to be 100% fine. a CRC check will find errors where Nero won't (during the burn OR the verification process), and CRC scanning will also find errors where actions such as PIF scanning won't..

Also, check some of the other unused discs in the same batch of blanks, you might have a bad batch of discs (not unheard of)..

This is only based on my personal experiences. My old dvdrw was a lite-on LDW-451S crossflashed to a SOHW-832S. I never had very good luck with any ritek ridata G04 media with this drive. I switched to ritek ridata DVD+R media (ricohjpn and ritek R03), and all was good. Bitsetting improved the compatability to boot. The sony DRU-700A is a rebadged lite-on SOHW-832S. Earlier litey's and rebadged sony/lite-on drives perform better with +r media. You can read for yourself here. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=103664 You can also booktype dvd+r/rw media to dvd-rom with your sony DRU-700A to increase compatability with stand-alone dvd players.

I would recommend trying some different/better media such as verbatum, taiyo yuden, sony mij, or fuji mij preferably +r format. This is ony based on my personal experiences and research. What you do is entirely up to you.

Hey, ... I just want to thank everyone for the great responses.

The first thing I'm going to do is head out and get one or more good DVD+R discs at a local store and try re-recording my latest movie backup. The copy on my hard drive plays just fine.

(I've been a little confused, because I don't have errors when I burn a personal video a friend made for me - from his digital Video camera - a video that never was never encoded. Still, I'm holding out that it's not something about the re-encoding that DVD Shrink does - especially since the ripped files on my hard drive play fine.)

After today, I'll buy some Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD+R from one of the reputable online retailers. The 50 pack on a spindle for $22 looks like the ticket. I'd love it if the only problem was media. And I should have some insight into that later today.

Mike. I looked at one of my DVDs in direct sunlight (that seems pretty strong - and thank goodness that spot in my vision has finally faded ô¿Ô¬). I *do* see one tiny dark spot - about 1/3 of the way in from the inner ring on one disc, but I see nothing unusual on another. Still, it probably wouldn't hurt to get a lens cleaner.

Bigfatboy, thanks for the direct pointer to the VY08 upgrade. I'll make that upgrade later today.

As for bitsetting, that's why I upgraded to VY06. I had initially used LiteOn firmware so I could do that, but my copy of Nero is OEM and only works if the drive is Sony. Thank goodness, Sony upgraded their firmware to include bit setting. I've been well into that topic here. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/111292

Mort, I'm taking your advice (hence the mention above about getting Taiyo Yuden DVD+R media). I'm about out of my Ritek 4x and 8x's, so it simply makes sense to follow your advice and the post at club.cdfreaks.

Again, thanks all. I'll let you know how things go, but it may be a couple of weeks. I'm leaving on a trip in a couple of days and probably won't have time to see any real results until after I get back, but from the advice here, it sounds like different media may do the trick (fingers crossed).

I see that I installed my DRU700A on the second IDE bus, but on port 1 instead of port 0. Is that a problem? (I know I set it as the master.)

I realize that, ideally, my LiteOn DVD ROM drive should be the slave on the second IDE bus, but I really never use the two drives together (I always copy to my hard drive from the Sony and then burn from the hard drive).

Should I bother opening up the case and moving the Sony DRU700A to port 0?

I also noticed this. I wonder if I should remove that booktype setting (when using RITEK DVD -R G04).

Your IDE configuration should be ok especially since you don't do any on the fly burning. The booktype setting is ok too since it doesn't apply to DVD-R media.
