There are programs out there that will do this but if you do it it will distort your movies. The aspect ratio will be off the picture will look squeezed togther cause it is taking the 16:9 (widescreen)and pushing the sides in to the 4:3 (standard)format. There might be other programs that will cut portions of the side of the movie off (crop) the film to fit onto the 4:3 format keeping the aspect ratio but then you will be missing parts of both sides of the movie. Just some info for you to think about when doing this.

I keep bumping into you today larrylje! guess we both have the day off.

My answer is more artistic. fart1958 ... dude(!) ... please allow me the courtesy of being blunt. why would you want to butcher a film like that? the director chose the aspect ratio for a reason ... would you chop off the sides of a Picasso or Renoir painting? and it's not a tv show ... its a movie. the only reason there is sometimes a choice between "Fullscreen" and Widescreen is because it is a leftover legacy from the days of VHS tapes and the old 1947 4:3 (1.33:1) Television Broadcast Standard. It costs the studios millions to remaster a movie into the few Pan & Scan releases that are still released and they will soon stop the practice. It's not even a matter of preferrence anymore (it is, I agree, a free country and your opinion is valid), in five years, you won't even be able to buy a square TV. and TV broadcasts will be made in 16:9 (1.85:1) to follow suit.

Sorry if I hit your hotbutton, but Pan & Scan (coyly referred to as "Fullscreen" or "Standard") is MY hotbutton!

Best regards,
Whisperer

if its the black letter boxing that is bothering you just use the zoom feature on your remote will fill up the screen .altho you lose some of the movie to the left and right it would be much diferent than 4:3 ratio.
also wanted to add i beleive avi2dvd can do dvd to dvd and change aspect ratios. i think its main movie only .

No dis intended to low income folks. But widescreen plays just fine on a square TV. And you don't lose any of the original movie image.

I think you are right that avi2dvd can change the aspect ratio; it was discussed in previous threads I think. As I remember though, it does it by simply squashing the widescreen into a square which stretches or elongates the vertical. That is an abomination worse than Pan & Scan.
