Hello;
for the last 2 months I've been experiencing a problem when inserting a dvd movie or a dvd-rw after it starts reading the disc it shuts down and my pc restarts as soon as I get back to my desktop I'm able to dvd-shrink the movie and able to backup the movie to dvd-r through nero recode. Well, for some odd reason today it wouldn't work after the fatal error that inserting a dvd media type in any of my dvd-rom's I got a blue screen with the following: Stop 0X0000007E (0X0000005,0XF7D84448,0XF7690568, 0XF7690264)
bastfao.sys address F7D84448 base at F7D810000, date stamp 41d916d4
anyway after troubleshooting my boot.ini and safe mode configurations for 4 hours I decided to rename this file bfastfao.sys in the drivers/system 32 folder to bfastfao.old. After I did that I was able to insert my dvd's or dvd-rw and able to play them fine and record to dvd-rw as well. Don't what this file is, but, renaming it helped!
can anyone shed a light on what bfastfao.sys is a driver for?

i typed 'bastfao.sys' into google, nothing at all came back. did a quick check on my pc (Windows XP, you didn't say what yours is) and not found. i guess it could be spyware, or a trojan/virus like file or something..

what i would say (it's an obvious statement) i'm sure in time you'll have problems if that file has been renamed and is actually needed, but for now just make sure virus checker is up to date etc etc, but i'll leave recommendations of that sort to others as there are gazillions of programs/utilities you can install to fend off spyware etc, and there are loads of posts here on afterdawn too. here's an example - look for dp's replies here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/226935

cool I will. It was just the strangest thing, now everything is fine. Must of been a spyware program of some sorts.
