Can I copy my WindowsXP Pro to another computer?

I have an old PC and it has WindowsXP Professional on it. And I bought a new one for my son that has WindowsXP Home. Is there any possible way to transfer it from my old PC to my son's new one?!

you can always use a backup utility like acronic true image, and restore an image of the OS on the new computer, but beware you will need to delete the hardware drivers and install new ones once you load, which might be quite a pain in the ass. You're better off backup up all the personal files on it to CD, but its worth a try

See I still use my old PC for work and stuff. And I'm scared to really do anything that could really effect it. I just want to copy XP Pro to a CD. If its possible what files do I have to copy?

doing a image backup won't harm or do anything to your old PC at all. Depending on how much stuff you have on your C drive depends on how many CDRs it will have to burn it to. It would be much easier with an external hard drive.

So I have to copy all the stuff thats on my hard drive also? I can't JUST get the files I need for XP Pro without anything else? I'm gonna need alot of CDs...

put the other computers harddrive in the computer with xp pro
use the norton ghost floppy disc to clone the c drive to the new computers harddrive
put it back in the new computer and start it up
it will find most of the drivers it needs from windows :)

no you can't just backup xp pro, backup utilities backup the entire drive. In your case it will probably just be much easier for you to backup your personal files (My Documents folder, IE favorites, email) and just install those on your new computer.

windows files are spread aaaaallll over the place, both in the open & hidden as does most but not all programs. set the pro drive as slave & copy what info you want but don't try copying the xp pro files onto home as you'll screw the system up. like putting gas in a diesel tank & the engine won't run but both are fuels.

No its even easier than than that. Go to microsoft. Look on the search on their site. Their is a url which you can download. It will put windows xp pro sp1 on 6 floppy disks. Then just wipe the new and start loading floppys right in order. Then use the serial code from the old comp just long as it aint pirated. The original that came with the comp. Its a green tag. Then you have pro on the new one. Tada da. Simple. If the new comp dont have a floppy...then take the old out of the comp and plug it into the new one. Then this way you dont hurt the old one and you can still use it. I purposely got one old comp laying round I kept just for the xp cd and serial. So it would be legal to reinastall the os since I own the copyright to it. If you need the url...holler and I will post it.

sp1 is 137meg so how do you put that onto 6 1.4meg floppies that might be compressed to 2meg?? i don't think you can load sp1 on without xp already loaded as sp is a service pack with all the fixes & whatnot for windows.

best way i know of copying xp to another comp is to use your xp disk and install it on a new comp then [REMOVED]

? strange i've used the same copy of xp for all my computers i have it on a 4.3 gig harddrive and whenever the kids kill theirs i just clone it onto theirs and it works fine

You can use the original install CD from Microsoft to load a newer version to a PC, but you still have to have a different Code to fully activate it. When you use a different CD then your original code, you will have to call in to Microsoft to explain what you are doing so they can verify your code(s) and give you a new one to punch in.
If you are trying to use one XP Pro with one XP Pro code on more then one computer, then legally you are out of luck. If you really want another type of XP on a machine, you can always purchase an OEM XP Home disk for under $90 bucks from Newegg.com or a Student upgrade of XP Pro for around the same price.

that is the install utility for making floppy boot disks for xp pro not for installing sp2. 2 different things.

Windows will let you install xp pro to another computer upto three times IF its for your use only. heard it on G4 a few months ago. Try it
and down load the updates. If it updates its ok.

They will work if you are installing the hard drive on the computer that you cloned it from.
In order for it to work efficiently on another computer, the other computer has to be the same setup as the computer it was cloned from.

If Windows XP or XP Pro detects any hardware differences between the two PC's such as the original and the PC accepting a cloned copy, poof goes the activation!

ahhh forgot that we all have almost identical computers :)
so you might have to activate it but thats ok bill gates people let you have several activations just tell em you blew to old computer
