I am looking to buy a DVD dual layer burner with lightscribe. Not very knowledgeable abbout these. I have looked at a HP 160i only becuz I have a Hp computer. My son suggested Benq and I have tried to do some rading on the 1640 model, but there is nothing better than personal experience as a recommendation. Wouldn't mind gettting the color lightscribe if they're out and not too expensive but my main comcern is quality for burning. Any suggestions..? Thanks

While the Benq DW1640 is an excellent DVD writer, it is not a 'lightscribe' .. That would be the Benq DW1625, which is lightyears better than a feeble HP drive ...
 Benq DW1625 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827101642

To be perfectly honest, since there is no such animal as 'color lightscribe' I'd say that the Benq DW1640 is a much better unit and is $20 cheaper ..

Other excellent writers that are reasonable in price are:
 NEC ND-3540a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152047

 LiteOn SOHW-1693s http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106989

Probably the BEST writer out there is the Plextor PX-716a, but it is kinda pricey ..

Also, as you look around, you may notice that Plextor markets a 'budget' unit .. the PX-740a .. this is just a rebadged Benq DW1640

All of the above writers either support bitsetting one way or another ..

Hopefully this will be of some help to you ...

Would you recommend the Benq1640 over the 1625 or is the only difference is that 1625 has lightscibe and 1640 does not?
Thx for your suggestions!!

The HP 640c lightscribe came with my pc. The compatability/coaster rate/and the errors when I tried to re-rip those hp backups didn't live up to my standards. Thus, my aged benq 1620 with over 1200+ burns at over 99% success rate replaced that HP.

Lightscribe capability:definetely the benq 1625. I believe this drive should have the booktyping capability to make your plus format backups into dvd-roms.Better playability in stand alones. If any of my friends or family wants to borrow a backup,I don't have to worry about their player/s being able to play my booktyped backups.

Benq 1625 or 1640 will be my next burner, whenever one of my benq 1620s goes on the fritz.I use full hub printable media,so the lightscribe feature isn't important to me.

Personally, I like the LiteOn SOHW-1693s .. It will write to both DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL, one of the very few writers to currently do so ..
