NEC 3520a and the 3540a are both excellent drives, they both burn dual layer disks, and they are around $40 on newegg.

My Lite-On 1613S just died. DVD Decryptor would say it successfully created a copy, but the end result was still a blank DVD. I had problems with loading movie DVDs, and burning data to blank DVDs. However, my Lite-On DVD drive clocked in well over 1200 DVD burns, so I got my money's worth out of it.
I just purchased a HP 640i +/-R Dual Layer Light Scribe DVD burner. I got it for $75 at Wal-Mart. I find that instead of burning at 4X, I can burn my games and movies at 16X, and game play and movie playbacks are smooth. That makes my copy times much, much shorter now. The bundled PowerDVD XP 4.0 impoved my DVD playbacks as well.

If you want to:
Burn dual layer plus media
Burn either format of single layer or rw media, and even booktyping.
Play your backups in a lot of stand alone players and pc drives
A very high success rate, even on the fly!
Quality burner, mine has over 1500+ burns already and has burned everything I slap in it including cmags.
Overburn 8x media to 12x and 16x and successful!
Pay under $50 incuding fed ex shipping.
Then:
Check out the benq 1620 or 1640 DVD-RW drives. I have 2 of the 1620s and those booktyped plus format to dvd-rom backups will play in virtually everything I slap them in.No need to work up a special recipe burn speed/format/or brand of media to get these backups to play on other drives.
1 burn coaster this year.
It performed so well,I bought a second benq 1620 for my spare pc.Now no need to worry about which burners backups I send them to certain family and friends. They play them all, unlike my kyhpermedia +8x/HP 640c/and I/O magic 16x.
Look at them at newegg.com
