Hi,
I would like to know the best software (preferably free:) for copying a copy-protected dual layer disc into two dvd's with all menus intact.

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks!

I would assume that using DVD Decrpter with something like IFOEdit would do the trick. IFOEdit is not user friendly though, so you will have to find some guides. IFOEdit.com should have a guide on doing this.

Can this be also done with DVD Shrink? It seems to do it but not with menus intact...

Thanks

I do beleive you can do it in DVD Shrink, but you are right about it losing the menus.

Did you look at the guide at www.IFOEdit.com? It does not seem too bad. If you have the hard drive space, you can make a copy fo the entire DVD and work with that in IFOEdit. If it doesn't work out then you can look at other solutions.

Also, why is it that you want to split the movie into two discs? Most movies can be compressed using DVD Shrink with no visual difference during playback. I have compressed as low as 52% and the movies look fine even on a 65" screen. Try taking out all extra audio and subtitle tracks. Also compress special features and menus as much as possible. If Shrink tells you the main movie will be 65% or higher, do that instead.

There is also a chance that something like Nero or Nero VIsion Express will split a movie into two discs. I remember a Ulead program that asked me if I wanted to split a dvd project into two discs, but I do not remember if it was its authoring program or burning program that did this.

I am actually using Nero 6 but did not know if I can do it with that or not. I dont think I can though.

I also didnt know that DVD Shrink will do it to one disc without losing quality. I tried that once using DVD Shrink with a dual layer but the 4.7GB copy would occasionally look "grainy", especially when there was movement or scene changes on the screen. Maybe I can try adjusting the compression like you said. I dont need the subtitles and extras, but the menus are necessary.
I also tried DVDFab Platinum and it seems to split the disc correctly, but it still left some things intact on the second disc that arent needed.

Hopefully the price of the DL blanks will drop soon ($20.00 for a 3pack!?!?..ouch!)

Thanks for all your help and efforts :)

Gary:

There are several methods for doing what you want. Mine is not any "better," it is merely the method that works the best for me.

I follow this procedure.

-I rip the entire disc to hard drive, using either DVDDecrypter in file mode, or else DVDShrink set for "no compression." I ignore the warning that the DVD might be too big to burn. I call this folder on the hard drive "original."
-I then use VOBBlanker to open that folder on my hard drive ("original"), and I blank out all extras, and also the second half of the main movie, at a chapter break, and I rip this result to a new folder on my hard drive (I call it "disc 1") Note that the main movie has no compression.
-I then re-open the result from the first rip in VOBBlanker (the folder called "original"). This time, I set it to just blank out the first half of the main movie. It keeps all of the extras, so they all appear on Disc 2. I then set it to rip this result into a new folder on the hard drive, called "Disc 2." Note that the second half of the main movie again has no compression.

-I burn the folder "Disc 1" to my first blank. (I use Nero, but any burner will do). Final result has no compression on the main movie.
-I burn the the folder "Disc 2" to my second blank. (I use Nero, but any burner will do) Final result has no compression on the main movie.

I end up with two discs. Both have NO COMPRESSION (beyond that used on the original DVD, of course). Both have ALL menus, and all of the menus work, to the degree that they can... Obviously, they can only access what is on that particular disc.

Disc 1 has all menus, and the first half of the main movie. It has every audio choice / soundtrack for the main movie, and also any director's commentaries, and also any subtitles. But only for the first half of that main movie. It ends at a chpater break, and then it reverts to the main menu, after a pause.

Disc 2 has all menus, and the second half of the main movie. It begins at a chapter break. It has every soundtrack for the main movie, and also any director's commentaries, and also any subtitles. But only for the second half of that main movie. It ends at the end of the main movie, and then it reverts to the main menu, after a pause. It also has ALL of the other extras, deleted scenes, trailers, documentaries, etc. It uses no additional compression on the main movie beyond that was on the original store-bought disc.

=====

Additional notes...

-VOBBlanker is free.

-VOBBlanker can look intimidating, when you first try it. You need a guide, and you will then find this process is a piece of cake. I have one, if you need it.

-There is a three to 5 second pause at the beginning of the main movie on disc two, if you do the above. I add one additional step, which takes perhaps 60 seconds, and it requires yet another (freeware) program. I use it to get rid of the pause, so the DVD player does not have to "cycle" through the missing chapters that are not on disc two. This step is completely optional, but it is so easy, I go ahead and do this. The program required is pgcEdit.

-Vobblanker scares many people off, unless they have a good guide. So does the program I use to get rid of the pause (pgcEdit). With a good guide, this entire process becomes easy, and routine. It admittedly takes longer than ripping a DVD5 to a DVD5. However, it takes less time than the compressing that most people are using with DVD-9 store-bought discs, and you end up with much better quality.

Let me know, if this sounds like what you need. I will direct you to the simple guide I follow.

-Bruce

Gary3072,
Why not use dvd clove2 with AnyDVD runnning on the background.??
You tick on the preserved menu option and choose the various title that you want to put to your dvd disk. Of course it's a bit troublesome but it really works.

Easy solution is burn the DVD with Shrink and keep the menus, and cut the
bonus featres etc. Then burn another disc doing the same thing but cut the movie and keep the bonus features.

>>>>Easy solution is burn the DVD with Shrink and keep the menus, and cut the bonus featres etc. <<<<

Mr. Burnz:

I am not in any way trying to be argumentative, but I do think it is important to clarify...

I believe the original poster wishes to maintain menus that are actual working menus. His original post uses the phrase "with all menus intact." Running the stuff through DVDShrink will cause him to lose the "working menus" the instant he clicks on the Re-author mode.

And, to be precise (so as not cause confusion), one cannot actually "burn the DVD with Shrink." DVDShrink has no capability for burning, at all. It can rip. It can compress. It can also be programmed to automatically start up another burning tool, so long as that burning tool is "Nero Burning Rom," or "DVDDecrypter."

>>>>>Then burn another disc doing the same thing but cut the movie and keep the bonus features.<<<<

Again, as soon as one chooses to "cut" the movie, one must be in re-author mode, which means the functioning menus are now long gone. He did specifically state his desire to maintain menus -- intact. Unless one merely desires a still graphic of a menu.

Take care,

-Bruce

Clone DVD with any DVD is the best program to use, but if you use shrink you can choose not to compress what you want to keep and let the rest compress as much as you like because they will be on the other disc

Mr. Burnz:

[Quote:]Where did I tell him to reauthor?[\Quote]

Sorry, I guess I should have clarified, or asked for further clarification. I assure you I intended no disrespect.

When you suggested that users "...burn the DVD with Shrink and keep the menus, and cut the bonus featres etc." it appears that you are advising that one should use the reauthor mode in DVDShrink. As far as I know, this is the only way one can "cut the bonus features" using DVDShrink. If I am incorrect, and you know something I do not know about DVDShrink's capabilities, by all means advise. Or, if you are advising that he use one of the other forms of software which can allow you to cut the bonus features, and still retain the working menus, then by all means please advise.

I hope this is clear, and does not further confuse...

Take care,

-Bruce

Here is an excellent guide for AnyDVD anc CloneDVD .. You can get a 21 day free trial for both

 http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/1FOR1%20BACKUP%20CLONEDVD&ANYDVD.pdf

   .. And a DVD Shrink guide ..

.. Of course if you want higher quality you can go ..

Personally, I believe that there's no substitute for a 1 to 1 copy using a DVD+R DL disc

I agree with catfreak on using CloneDVD to split, it works the best and you can keep the menu functional on both disks which works out well for TV Series splits.

Here is a link to the guide I use:

http://jsoto.posunplugged.com/guides/VobBlanker/splitdvd9/index.php

Note about the above...

The guide linked above assumes you have ripped the entire original DVD9 disc to your hard drive already. This can be done using DVDDecrypter, or DVDShrink (use whole disc mode, and change the compression rate to NO COMPRESSION and ignore the warning that it is too big).

It also has a (completely optional) final part which gets rid of the "pause" which often occurs at the beginning of your second burned disc. This final step is so easy, I have used this option every time.

I have also been using one additional step... I use VOBBlanker to insert a still frame at the end of the first disc, so a frame pops up for 15 seconds, which urges users to "Please Insert Disc 2." This step is NOT outlined in the guide, but it is so easy I figured it out on my own, after using this method about four times.

Again, the final results are as follows:

-Two discs.
-Both discs have all of the menus. All menus continue to function.
-Both discs have every audio stream intact (foreign languages, DD 5.1, ACS 2.0, DTS, whatever was on the original). The same, for all subtitles.
-Disc one begins with any main menu, and has all sub-menus available. It contains the first half of the movie, and ends at a chapter break (except mine then adds an attractive "change discs" frame). It begins at the Main Menu, and has all sub-menus available. It contains the first half of the main movie. The main movie has NO COMPRESSION.
-Disc two begins again with any main menu, and has all sub-menus available. It contains the second half of the movie, and begins where the first disc ended, at that chapter break. There is no pause if you access "play" or if you try to access a chapter which was on disc 1 (it jumps right to the first available chapter). This second disc also has every "extra." Although you can easily blank anything you do not wish to sit through... and you can preview any material easily to determine this. The main movie has NO COMPRESSION.

If anyone needs info on the only thing not covered in the guide -- the insertion of the still frame to tell you switch to a second disc -- let me know, and I can add this info in this thread.

Bruce,
Well that seems to work pretty well. Thanks. Can you explain your method of inserting a blank frame at the end of disk 1 now?

dlerner:

FIRST --> you need to get some "insert disc 2" images. These can be made yourself. I use Photoshop to do this.

You can also download a few from this page, which has about six of them. These are all "ready to go," which means they are already encoded into brief ".VOB" files. They are zipped, so you will need to unzip them.

http://www.dvdshrink.info/inserts.php

Once you have an image to insert, we can add the new step to the guide I directed you to. This new Step needs to be added at the very end of the VOBBLANKER process for DISC 1. I have re-copied the paragraph preceding it, so you can figure out exactly where this step goes.

===
Scroll down to the last cells, highlight and click blank. Repeat on other cells. Remember we still need to blank 1382MB. You can use a calculator to add all the blanked cells or trial and error. In this example we blanked up to cell # 19 chapter 17 to give use a final size of 3979MB. I recommend blanking at a chapter point. Example cell #24 is not at a start of a chapter it belongs to chapter 21 with cell #23 as a starting point.

===INSERTED NEW STEP BEGINS HERE ====

Now, if you wish to insert a still frame which tells users to ?insert a new disc,? we should add this one simple step. Right now, in the sample we used our DISC 1 will consist of chapters 1 through 16. Our first ?BLANK? cell is chapter 17.

Access the ?CELLS LIST? again. Click on Chapter 17, the first cell to be blanked. Instead of ?blanking? it, we are going to ?REPLACE? it. With Chapter 17 highlighted, click on the ?REPLACE? button over at the right.

A new window will open up. We can now BROWSE and direct the program to any normal ?.VOB? file. Choose the .VOB file which corresponds to the still frame you want to insert. Once this has been selected, you simply click on ?OPEN? which closes that window. Then, click on the ?APPLY? button, and finally click on ?CLOSE.?

We are now ready to let the software do its thing for DISC 1.

==END OF NEW INSERTED STEP ===
Click on PROCESS!!

I hope this is clear.

================================

P.S. I have found that it is very easy to use DVDShrink to turn any graphic into a "insert disc two image." You simply load up a single title from ANY ripped collection, using the "Open Files" option. Then, you change to "REAUTHOR" mode. You drag a SINGLE TITLE into the left window. Then, you adjust the time to your desired time, by using the "START / END FRAMES" option. Then, you change the "COMPRESSION" setting and make it: "STILL IMAGE." (Do NOT use Still Pictures!) Then, you will be able to "BROWSE" to any graphic, and Shrink will use it as a still image instead of the title you originally chose.

Here is a guide that shows this occurring (even though it is a part of a larger set of titles):

Yes, very clear. Thanks for taking the time to explain all that. I'm sure I will be using it extensively in the future. As will anyone who searches on this subject in the future, like I originally did.
