splitting AVI in virtualdub -- sound problems

am trying to split an AVI in VirtualDub, but when I open the avi it says the VBR encoding for the sound is wrong, which causes my split file's sound to lag behind the video. The error says I should decompress the entire stream to wave, then recompress. How do I do this, then get it into sync with the video?? Thanks!!
