Man that's strange. Tuff disk is basically crap, while Verbatim is top notch. Post some scans of movies you have on Verb's and see if the same low score holds true. I have feeling it won't.

Films are fine, it's the bloody games that don't work... In all the coasters i done so far (10+) the ones that come closer to getting to work are the Tuff Disks... The Verbs are good in films and all, but don't work on the PS2......

Go ahead and run Nero CD/DVD Speed on some your movies on Verbatim's. I know you said they play fine, but just post the results anyway.

As you can see it works for films without problems.

Yeah that's more what you would expect from Verbatim. I don't have any explanation for the 0 score. Did you have a bunch of stuff running in the background while burning? I'm gonna consult with some experts on this one. Stay tuned.

I think the quick scan is a close approximation of the quality. It's not like if you ran a full scan on the Verb that gave you a 0 that it would produce a 90 or something like that. From my experience it makes a couple points difference if you run the full scan. The full scan takes 30-40 mins to complete on my PC, F**K that, I've got better things to do. I PMed Alkohol about your problem, oh the irony lol. If anyone can help you, he can. Good Luck.

Thanks, i went looking for him for this. (don't we all... LOL!)
On his thread, gear79 told me to do a full scan on that Tuff disk i shown you, because the quick scan isn't acurate. (so far and after 50% done it's 90%...)

I think that definetely proves your point...

@permiggs

I don't know how you burned (I'm guessing you're using alcohol 120) or got your Verbatim's backup copy turning into coaster, but according to my knowledge the Verbs are top notch (they should top those Tuff media). Regardless how how small/big the files has. I've been burning over 6 years and I've never seen any 0 Quality Scores for the Verbs at all.

Perhaps, there's a "hiccup" when you burned using the Verbs. Just out of curiosity, is your firmware up to date? Apparently, I'm a DVD+R person and yes... I prefer +R over -R. I can scan a couple of my Verbs and Yuden if you like to see them and post it here just for reference.

Yeah I agree. I have no other explanation for that 0 score. It must just've been a bad burn or defective disk. I use Verbatim Dual Layer DVD+R's for backing up my DVD-9 games and movies, and they have quality scores in the 90's. Dual Layer media isn't nearly as reliable as good DVD-5 media. I'd say get some Taiyo Yuden's or High Grade Hitachi Maxell media and see if that helps. In my personal opinion, I think both those brands are slightly better than Verbatim's. After my experience with Taiyo Yuden TYG02 media, there's nothing else I'd consider using. It's cheap, reliable and, great quality. 85/85 for successful burns from my first cake box. I just ordered some more of these: http://supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-r-me... That's the best solution I can think of.

Here is one that I just burned yesterday (NEED FOR SPEED: MOST WANTED) using Verbatim 16X DVD+R "advanced azo" that was burned at 4X. I did a direct ripped to the hard drive and burned it straight up back on using DVD Decrypter. Again, my results still standing strong, proving that burning at 4X is the best. I will be scanning a few of my most trusted media, the Maxell 8X DVD+R (High Grade by Hitachi Corp. - made in japan) and I'll post the results back.

16X Verbatim DVD+R "advanced azo" burned at 4X

Hi Alkohol, long time no see... ;)

Like i said before those three burns didn't work. That was the only Verb to underscore as i've shown Tokijin a good one done yesterday.

I ripped the game into the HDD then burned it straight in @ 1x... Those were the results... Done the Tuff Disk first, it loaded up, got to quick race, had a go and all... no probs, but when i got to career mode, it was unplayable.

Thinking it was a bad media problem, i burnt it into a Maxell to see the difference. Didn't recognize it as a PS2 game. Out came the Verb's, me thinking that was it, i had to exchange my big dollar bill... Same thing... No game...

After NFSMW, i tried Call of Duty 2, TCSONY and the result was the same: coasters. The best i got was a freeze on the menu or after/during the opening sequence.

That happens burning with DVD Decrypter and Alcohol 120%.

Any suggestions are welcome at this point.

Cheers mate.

@permiggs

Yeah, long time no see buddy. Hope everything turns out right for you man. Obviously, even I go by alkohol (a nick for personal use) which is identicle to alochol 120. However, I've never used Alcohol 120 before. I've heard a lot about it and I've seen tons of people use it though. On the other hand, I would highly recommend DVD Decrypter, Nero Express or ImgBurn (the newly renovated DVD Decrypter from the same author/creator). My only suggestion is make sure your burner's firmware is up to date. Additionally, you may want to try to burn at 4X instead of 1X because sometimes burning at too low like 1X maybe too slow and that can cause a playback issue as well.

This is just a "mini guide" from my other guide, here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/275350 for those that have not burned their PS2 games using Nero Express and or this is mainly for burning any "4.5GB PS2 games" or for burning "an already rebuild ISO PS2 games" only. Give it a shot and see how you like it. Again, the choice is yours (either ImgBurn, DVD Decrypter ro Nero is fine).

Enjoyed it, happy burning and Happy Holidays!!!!

Well, things are turning out as good as i can handle it as you might imagine... ;) (@Tokijin- Long story... )

That is a good guide! I'll try to use that method with another game as i took NFSMW back to Blockbuster. I'll come back soon with the result.

There seem to be something wrong with the AD site as this is the third time i attempt this answer, it seems to not respond all the time...

Miggs.

@Alkohol:

Just realized one thing mate. You say here in your guide that you use DVD+R... Based on it, is it safe to use a DVD-R?

Will it make a difference?

Since i don't know if i need a DVD+R for that guide (depending on your answer i might go out and buy a few +R's) i had another go at burning GTASA using Alcohol 120%.

This was an experience, so i could show you the quality scan. I used a Verbatim ADVANCED AZO 8x:

As you can see it doesn't look very good does it? I also ran a scan for the surface and i got 100% good nick.

What do you reckon mate?

On this attempt the game loads up really well, as fast as the original, the game starts without problems, go into the map menu, do everything, the movement is perfect then when i try to get out of the house, it freezes during download...

Why, dear god why?!?

I'm sad... :(

Are you using Swap Magic 3.6?

Yeah, just done another one based on Alkohol's guide on NFSMW.

It's the same as before with the Tuff Disks... It just loads up every bit of the track... Tried load it pressing square, but it's just the same...

This swap magic 3.6 so far only gave me headaches...

Yeah that's shitty. I don't know what to tell you man. Does your PS2 load original games okay? Maybe you could try cleaning your laser. Should be simple since you have a flip top.

65. Q. I suspect my laser could be dirty. Should I use a lens cleaner or open my PS2 and clean the lens with a Q-tip and rubbing Alcohol?
A. Avoid the lens cleaners. They have the potential to scratch the lens making matters worse. The best strategy is to open your PS2 and clean the lens with a Q tip and rubbing Alcohol.

My PS2 is fine, it works with all my games, my 2 backups, and the other ones actually load up, they just don't go any further...

I heard someone on the other thread- Http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/257531- having the same problem, tried to do the same procedure they claim made it 'work', but it didn't...

I mean, makes no sense, Pro Evo 5 got 50 in the quality score (on a Tuff Disk), yet it plays like the original one...

Has my memory RAM got anything to do with it? 512Mb DDR...

I doubt it. I think I asked you this before, but I'll ask again. Do you have a ton of things open while you're burning DVD's? For example IE, MSN messenger, things like that? That could certainly affect the quality of your burn. Make sure you burn with nothing running in the background. Other than that try cleaning your laser with a Q-tip and rubbing Alcohol, like I suggested.

Nowadays when i'm burning something (DVD, game, image) i close everything in the background... I think the only thing that stays open is Norton 2K5, and even that, it's only the Anti-Virus because i close the Firewall as well... I even turn the monitor off!(And go downstairs for a cig)

I cleaned the laser with ethilic alcohol. Anything stronger than that and we're talking nuclear...lol.
