Hello Everyone,
My Lite-on SOHW-1633s has a firmware code of BGS4 according to DVD Identifier. I tried to do a firmware update and went to the firmware homepage. They list the latest firmware as BSOS. I downloaded that and tried to flash my lite-on and it came up with an error saying: No matched drive detected! This utility is only for lite-on DVDRW SOHW-1633S. Detected drives:
0-0-0-0 E:LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1633S BGS4
0-0-1-0 F:MEMOREX DVD16+/DL4RWiD2 JWS6

I flashed the memorex a few days ago, and it upgraded fine. I have the BSOH firmware downloaded also, but I don't want to do an incorrect flash and possibly destroy the drive. The lite-on is working fine, but I know it could probably use a firmware update as I have had this system for over 6 months.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I hope this comes out. Never tried to put an image up before.

The picture didn't come out. I must be doing something wrong.

Ok, I managed to fix the problem. I guess my firmware was so behind i had to go to the BSOH update first and then to the BSOS. Just an FYI for those with outdated firmware like i had.

I still can't figure out how to post a picture here, but that is a minor thing.

Hi larrylje,
Maybe it was the link to the site that was wrong. I went to imageshack tried it again with a .png of a kprobe2 scan of a CMC disk. If it shows up below,

then it works..

larrylje,
Where do you host your pictures? Could I be having a problem with imageshack? When I click on the thumbnail of the picture at:
http://img380.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cmcmagchina2co.png
it comes up in my explorer browser as the valid image. When i follow your instructions and place my link above between [*img] and [*/img] i wind up with the little dead red x. I removed the * like you said.
It could also be something very simple and stupid on my part,, i will admit that. :)
Thanks for your help.

copy that and place it between the [*img] and the link [*/img] with no *

the IMG has to be in lower case img

larrylje,
I knew it was something stupid and simple on my part :). Thanks a bunch! You guys always tell us idiots to turn off the caps locks and here is another reason why caps can be bad. Thanks again. Now I can get some sleep without trying to solve this in my dreams. Here is the other scan with the Ty disks:

Thanks, but I managed to get mine upgrated to BSOS which is supposed to be the latest firmware for the lite-on. If you try to go directly to the BSOS upgrade and you get an error saying the firmware upgrade is only for your drive and terminates, go back a couple of versions and try to upgrade. Then you can go to BSOS. That is what I had to do to get mine to upgrade. Everything is fine now.
Here is the place where I got my firmware update:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces=LITE-ON+SOHW-1633S
Thanks for the help. This is a great place to learn and one of my favorite sites to visit.

MaxBurn, I have the same burner with the BSOS firmware. It loves those Ty's. I get very similar results, although someone told me to set the test speed for KProbe at 4X for more accurate results. Anyone know if this really matters?

the BSOS is not the latetest................... why would mine be an oem version of BPSA?
they go in alphabetical order, the higher the letter the later the update.
here is the link........ changing firmware to a BPSD
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?software...
but like i said, mine is an HP puter.. may be a difference.

Yes that is the diffrence it says on Lite-On website that if you have an OEM version of the drive in another computer not to flash to the new BSOS firmware. To go to the site what ever manfacture computer your drive is installed in and get the firmware off thier site.

@MaxBurn that could of been why your firnware didnt look right when you updated it. Did your DVD burrner come installed with the computer you bought? Example: HP, Compaqe, Dell etc. etc.? If so you probably needed to go to that website to get the firmware update.

That is strange. Yes the HP site lists a version as BPSD.
I also checked
http://www.cdfreaks.com/drive/578
and at lite-on site
http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download.htm
and they both list BSOS as the latest.. Maybe they are behind the times. For now I am going to stick with BSOS but thanks for the link. If I start getting burn or media reading problems I might flash it up. BTW the CD freaks forum didn't have much good to say about my lite-on. I like mine. It has done over 400 DVDs with very few coasters (maybe 10 out of over 400) and most of those were memorex disks that turned out to be made by CMC-MAG. Actually because of their crappy media, i found this site, and updateded many of my programs and firmware. So they have done some good, at least for me. I actually find myself reading thru other ppls Nero error log files posted here looking for the problem.. although many here are much better than me at seeing the problems.

@ davidw001
Probably to be accurate I should have scanned at the same speed I burnt at but the CMC-MAG disk was burnt on my stand alone DVR which went at 1x for that particular film. Which should have given the media the best chance of performing well. I just wanted a quick comparison test between same film but different media and computer. Not completely scientific, but better than guessing.
Thanks again for all the help and happy burning!!

I just noticed in your post;
Quote:

Isn't BSOS is higher than BPSA? I don't say this to be rude or anything like that. If I am wrong, please let me know, as mine was an OEM version BGS4 (machine bought about 7months ago) and that firmware version was pretty old. You can buy a brand new DVD burner right out of the box, slap it in your machine today, and it will probably be in need of a firmware update.
Again, don't get me wrong. I appreciate any help i can get, and if i am wrong about something i am sure someone in here will point it out. :)

hmmmm........ i must say, i feel like an ass now !
i musta have not gotten enough sleep, as i have forgotten my alphabet !

here is how to do your firmware update, just in case !!

1: Download LtnFW.
2: Run LtnFW.
3: At the top, there is a list of drives on your computer. Select your 1633S.
4: Select the "Backup" option
5: Click "Browse" to select a file to save the backup to.
6: Click "Start" to start the backup. Wait a bit for the backup to proceed. And then you're done.

The backup file (the file you selected in step 5) should be 1 MB in size. Use WinZIP to zip up this file.

(this is a quote from one of the guys at codeguys)
It's just an OEM version of the drive, which is why the firmware update doesn't work. Not a biggie; this is actually very simple to fix...

Step 1: Back up your current firmware using LtnFW! If you don't do this, then there will be no way for you to undo any of this stuff if the need arises. Just download & run LtnFW, select a filename to save the backup to, and click the button for backup. Please e-mail us a zipped-up copy of this firmware back up, as it would be nice to have for our collection. http://codeguys.rpc1.org/contact.html

Step 2: Flash your drive with a FlashFixed firmware. The official flashers from LiteOn are NOT FlashFixed, which is why you have not been successful. You can download the FlashFix tool to FlashFix the official firmware from LiteOn. Or you could just download the stock BS0S firmware from our website (all of the stock firmwares on our website are already FlashFixed). http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html#SOHW-1633S

If you feel adventurous, you can do fancier things like convert your drive to a 1653S for 12x -R and 4x +R DL support. http://codeguys.rpc1.org/dvdrw_overview.html for more info.

Hope you lot don't mind, this is very similar to MaxBurn's problem and a very similar drive so hoping you lot can help.

now here's a first for me. i'm unable to update the firmware on my new 1693S from KS09 to KS0A. i'd already found some readme files for both firmwares so i can see there's nothing in the new update that i need right now (Ricoh code, can't remember which). The reason i want tlo get the firmware sorted is cus i can't get Nero to booktype my discs. i can use the official Lite-on booktype utility to booktype a single disc, then i click 'save setting' box. When burning the disc using Nero there's no mention of booktyping. nor is there a dropdown box in Nero that even mentions booktype (my previous Sony drive had this dropdown box in Nero).

Anyway, have been searching everywhere for help on this as ltnfw nor any other method will work. have been messing with omnipatcher etc etc etc.

All i get when i go to update is "No matched drive detected!". now i think i have the clue i just need to figure out how to get around it. In ltnfw there is nothing in the drop down box at top of the utility ie it can't see the drive. now when i switch om my usb-housed LG cd burner, the name of the drive is selectable in ltnfw. (tried that just to see if ltnfw was working).

have been scouring cdfreaks site for ages, have downloaded crossflashed firmware for this drive yada yada yada. the best progress i can make is to use omnipatcher to load the ks0a firmware. i can also make changes via omnipatcher and it'll save me a new patched firmware. However i can't actually use the damn thing cus ltnfw can't 'see' the drive. No wonder newbies have so much trouble with all this sh*t!. i'm tempted to haul the drive back to the shop and swap for it's namesake - the Sony DRU-800A. Surely the 1693S isn't so new that Lite-on's tools aren't new enough to cater for the drive ???

I'm off to do more googling...(have done a few successful burns on this drive by the way, Nero recognises it correctly (except the booktype bit). i was gonna try Lightning UK's new 'imgburn' burning program but i feel my problem isn't Nero but is due to the drive not quite being 'seen' correctly..

Help!!

LOL The Lite-On DVDRW SOHW 1633S seems to be a popular burner. I have one too. :-)
I have a quick question though, is it capable of booktyping? I've been buying DVD-Rs since I've been burning DVDs. I'd like to try booktyping some DVD+Rs, but I want to make sure I can booktype before buying them.

just have a glance at that other thread. basically an example is the Sony DRU-800A is really a Lite-On 1693S underneath, with a posh Sony outer 'skin'. as i posted in that other link, the Lite-On 1633S is 'rebadged' by quite a few other companies. It goes on with most things, for instance at work we use a 6-drive tape robot that's badged "Sun Storedge L60" but really it's a Hewlett Packard something-or-other underneath. It's an incredibly widespread practice.
