Hi Creaky,
My firmware was so old, the new update would not work. It didn't recognize my drive, even though it listed the update as only for that drive. It drove me nuts, until i tried an older update, got that one to take, and then went to the latest BSOS. Sounds like you have tried the Progressive update method. I was getting the exact same error as you, when i tried to update. Now the lite-on booktypes with no problems. In shrink when it uses Nero to burn, I get a check mark next to booktype to dvd-rom when using +r media. It even booktyped a VerbDL into DVD-ROM. I have very limited experience with firmware updates, and the lite-on was the hardest one to get current in this case. You are the research master, so if you are having problems with this, us mere mortals don't have a chance. LOL I hope you get it fixed, or barring that, exchange it like you said. Good luck. Sorry i couldn't be of help..(how often do we get a chance to help creaky? It is always him helping us)
bless him!, lol, am feeling rather off this evening and that made my day. cheers, i do live on google hehe. if you fancy a laugh re bad media look at the 1st link in my sig, just updated it to taunt Bulkpaq media.
as to the Lite-on i could cheat and rip out the drive and plug it into this spare PC, and try to update the firmware here, however i am more concerned as why booktyping is not working. very odd and i shall keep searching..
@creaky,
Glad I lifted your cheer a little bit today.. I like the cheating by swapping to another pc fix, and i was going to recommend that. Once the firmware is updated, it may even fix the booktyping. It did on my lite-on. Before firmware update, it did not booktype. (it may also have been because i didn't know about booktyping) I remember the option to booktype to DVD-ROM was greyed out when using +R before, and now it is checkable if there is such a word. I have an older back-up Celeron PC that i can use for such things, and i am going to make it a dedicated burner. Right now it only has a DVD-ROM drive, and i want to put a BENQ in it, but don't have the $ right now. Which gives me another project for tonight.. I am going to tear in to the old PC and put an old lite-on burner i have in it. It will probably need a firmware upgrade, and i will be back here asking you for help..LOL :)
I know this is an old thread, but wanted to post something I found out recently. Some of you may know this already, but I'm sure there are some that don't.
This info I got, applied to HP computers, but may be the same with all name brands.
If you have an OEM LiteOn burner in your HP, it's using HP's firmware. If you flash it to LiteOn's firmware version, you will void your warranty.
Stupid, huh? Just another example of the brand names being so proprietary. Stuff like this is why I'm glad I have a custom built PC. I can do what I want to it. :o)
Just thought I'd pass this tidbit of information along. I learned this on one of the Firmware pages.........
