I'm running a 2500+ AMD Athlon and finding that it just can't run the high end games I want to play effectively anymore. I'm wondering what type of processor to upgrade to and a good motherboard for this. I've been thinking AMD 64. Would you go this route?

I want to play games like Far Cry, Doom III and Half-Life 2 at near highest settings (I don't have to have the highest). I never buy top self hardware as I can't afford that. I usually buy middle high or high low. I have 1 GB of RAM, but will probably upgrade as a new motherboard will support higher quality RAM. I already have a Radeon X850Pro, so I'm OK there. Just wondering if anybody had suggestions on which way to go for a motherboard and processor. Probably looking to keep it under $400.

you have similar gfx card and ram as me. I bought a pretty cheap motherboard for £40 (msi neo2 platinum)and an a64 3800 cpu. Im not sure how much these cpu go for now but when i got mine it was £430. that was back when they were first released so they should be much cheaper now - and i can play just about every game maxed out with 6xaa and 1600x1200 resolution.
halflife 2 runs especially well at these settings, pretty much never dropping below 60 - 70 fps.
maybe an a64 3500 would be a little cheaper for you and still be able to max out a lot of games.

I was thinking about AMD 64 3700 with a 2000FSB. These are going for about $300 now. Have any suggestions for a motherboard? Like I said, I don't need top of the line, but I would like to buy a reliable name brand.
