Audible files change format on device?

HAs anyone noticed that when you put the aa files on your device, IPOD, Creative MUvo etc., that the file format changes from aa to ASF or someother format?

I recently noticed on my new Zen nanoplus that when audible manager puts them on my zen, they go from aa to asf on my device. Was wondering if you copied them from your device to a harddrive if they would stay asf files.????
