Either way the video is getting converted to xvid or mpg so surely there would be quality lost either way(?) I would use VSO's DivxToDVD for avi to dvd.

The less lossy conversions the better though and obviously if the final product is to be mpg, then you are going to have to convert to mpg at some stage, you do not however need to convert to DivX.

Exactly. So if you want an AVI with hardsubs then it might be the perfect app for the job. If you want a (S)VCD or DVD with hardsubs then it isn't.

It's quite simple.
Use the current DivXtoDVD.
All you need to do is load your AVI into it, drag and drop or load your subtitle into into it and convert.
It produces optional subtitles of excellent quality, providing the originals were also.
