My stand alone dvd player will only play uncompressed DVD+Rs, yet compressed DVD-Rs play fine. I use the LG-4160B as my burner and up to now I cannot change the Book Type from DVD+R to DVD-ROM. I also use AnyDVD and DVDShrink.

When I shrink a dvd that needs compression only a DVD-R will play in my dvd player, DVD+R forget it. Yet if the dvd doesn't need compression a DVD+R works fine!

Weird!

Kyliefan 1, I too have an LG 4160B DVD Writer, you CAN NOT change the book type with this drive, however If you get away from using DVDShrink & use CloneDVD 2 with AnyDVD, and use only DVD-R media (Good Quality like Sony, Verbatim, Fuji Yaiyo Yuden) I have used DVD Shrink, for a FREE program it was Great! But nowadays you need a Quality Software that gets updated. I HIGHLY recommend you download the 21 day free use CloneDVD 2, use it to copy titles only, Main Movie. See how it works for you! I can tell you this FACT,
CloneDVD 2 has asved my butt on more than one occasion! I BOOUGHT it! And AnyDVD! The best money I ever spent! By the way, DVD-R is already DVD-ROM. DVD+R works too, but not all Stand alone players like them. I used to ahve the SAME issues with DVDShrink. Try what I suggest. It'll cost you nothing!

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

Not trying to argue, but DVD-R is not dvd-rom. They are prewritten as DVD-R in the booktype area on the disc and are booktyped DVD-R and this is why they can not be changed. On dvd+r's this booktype area is left blank and that is why they can be booktyped dvd-rom. Here's a good read. http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/150

Thanks Mort81! I was misinformed, but now I learned something! I always say:"When you're too Old to learn, you must be Dead." Really, thanks! That's one Primary Reason I joined up at Afterdawn, to learn & share! I should be showing up as "Member" instead of Junior Member, I have over 100 posts, but so far, it has not changed. Oh well. I am sure it will soon. Thanks Again Mort81!

Hi kiv or should I say dr TY,

You can't go wrong with good quality dvd+r media booktyped dvd-rom at least IMO. There are still some long time dvd-r users that feel bitsetting is unnecessary but I personally have had better results with dvd+r booktyped dvd-rom for a couple reasons, 1: my litey performs better with dvd+r media (I haven't tried dvd-r with my benq since I switched to dvd+r and bitsetting), 2: my brother has a set top dvd player that is very picky and is more compatable with dvd+r booktyped dvd-rom than dvd-r (my set top players will play anything).

Booktyping may not be a requirement for some but if your dvdrw is capable why not take advantage of it. It won't hurt and in some cases will increase compatability. Take care and have a good one.

bunnyrip,

Congrats, you be a member now.

@Mort81

I got to agree ever since I got my drives that booktype and started using +R I really like the quality I am getting. IMHO I think they burn better, play better and look better.

Kyliefan1,

You can buy a good 16x dvdrw drive capable of bitsetting for about $40 now eg. Lite-on SOHW-1693S or Benq DW1640.
