Using different brands of RAM can cause problems.

Ideally when you add a new set of RAM it should be of the SAME brand and certainly the same speed as the other sticks. if it isn't it will likely cause booting problems. If you can find out what brand your existing memory is, and swap what you bought for that brand, you shouldn't have any trouble, but a mismatch in brands could prove a problem.

There is more than 1 brand, but it has worked like that for ages. indeed also my new ram is a different brand but its all the same speed of pc3200.
The thing is though the manual goes on about certain configurations of ram that will not work and some configs that will only work in singe channel mode/some will only work in dual channel and how in some configs the ram has to be all double or single sided.

The manual dosent clarify this enough for me (yes im stupid lol) and I don't have the money to either mess about trying different types and configs of ram or to replace all my ram with the same type.
The way its going thoug its looking like I will need a whole new set of ram :(

Unfortunately, my RAM is all single channel and I merely put it in and away it went - it came without instructions. As for dual channel, i'm not sure. Most of the settings it talks about are probably on the BIOS, there's not much you can do with RAM from a physical perspective. try it and see really, you shouldn't be able to damage anything.
