Hello All, I've been surfing this form and some others trying to find an answer to my problem. I've found much help but still no final answer. I have a LiteOn 1633S DVDRW drive, and am using Nero to try to burn DVD's. Every time I burn a DVD it won't play. Did some searching and it seems the best answer why is I need to change the booktype from DVD+R to DVD-ROM. To try to make a long story short, I had to update the firmware, I'm currently running the most up to date firmware. And have the Booktype utility that LiteOn's web site lists. It says Booktype changed but when I go back to it or look at the book type in Nero they both still say DVD+R. I can't find any sort of option to change this in Nero either. Just for kicks I tested a DVD anyway after it claims it was changed, but still get the same results - a DVD that won't play. Any help, please - I'd be greatful.

may i ask what kind of DVD+R media you are using? (brand name and also rated speed of said media-i noticed my liteon is somewhat picky with media, it's either good media or i get faulty burns)
i have this same drive and i also use the liteon utility to change the booktype permanently, IF this doesn't work for you for some odd reason, you can do it with Nero (this is how i do it with my other drives that are not liteons) :)
this is how you do it, in the best way i can explain it (i use my liteon on a 2nd computer, so i did this a LONG time ago) :)
here is a simple explanation if you do decide to use nero~ to change the booktype to dvd-rom~
Open up "Nero Express"
on Nero Express 6, click "Copy Entire Disc" or (on the top drop down arrow, click on "DVD," Copy DVD on "Copy and Back Up image.)
Now you should see an "Options" on the right, next to the "Source Drive & Destination Drive", click on "Options"
Under "Book Type Settings" you should be able to change to "DVD-ROM" or "Automatic" and click "OK" to change or accept. That's it you're done. Sometimes I just leave it on "Automatic" which Nero automatically change the book type to DVD-ROM when it starts to burn or back up. But if you like yours set to DVD-ROM, then just click on DVD-ROM under "Book Type Settings"
good luck~ :)

I'm using Sony DVD+R 1X-8X
As far as Nero, when I go under options there, there does not appear to be a 'book type setting'
It's mainly an information window, the only thing it appears that can be changed is a check box by "SMART-BURN enabled", which is currently checked.

Liteon's booktype utility has nothing to do with Smartburn.
It should look something like this:
http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/Zip/BookTypeManual_e.pdf
Also, if you use the Liteon Utility bitsetting tool, you have to set it EVERY time, before you burn, as it defaults back to dvd+r as soon as you close the program. I believe there is a way to permanently set your drive to burn +r's to dvd-rom, but it is a hack..... unless Liteon changed things. I have a 451s.

I know the liteon booktype utility has nothing to do with smartburn. I was just saying that smartburn is the only thing on the options screen in Nero that allows you to change it.
I'm using Nero 6.3.1.17

mackdl,
You shouldn't have to set the booktype to dvd-rom for every burn with your 451s. The booktype setting should be stored in the drives memory instead of volatile memory.
Q: [DVD-Writers] How do I use bitsetting (change the booktype) with LiteOn drives?
A: With a few exceptions (e.g., the SOHW-802S and the SOHW-822S), bitsetting on LiteOn drives and rebadged LiteOn drives work like this:
There is a setting stored in the drive's memory that tells the drive what booktype to use whenever it burns a disc.
By default, this setting is set to "Normal" (i.e., keep +R discs as +R and +RW discs as +RW).
The official LiteOn BookType Utility can be used to change this setting. Because all burns will be burned using the current setting, once you change the setting, all subsequent burns will be burned using the new setting without the need to take any further action.
On the screen of this tool, "Current Disc Type" represents the physical disc type of the inserted disc. "Current Disc Booktype" represents the current booktype written on the disc, or if the disc is not written, it will display the current physical disc type. Hint: You can use this to check the booktype of a burned disc. "Change booktype to" is a bit misleading, and it represents the current booktype setting of the drive. Selecting a different setting from the drop-down and clicking "Change" is what changes the current drive setting. Remember, as mentioned above, the current drive setting simply represents what booktype will be used the next time a disc is burned. The "Write Now" button is only for DVD+RW media and is explained in a later bullet.
There is, however, one important caveat. For a number of the older drives/firmwares, this setting is stored in volatile memory and is lost whenever the drive is reset (system reboot, firmware flash, etc.). Thus, when the drive is reset, the booktype setting will revert to the default setting (i.e., "Normal").
For people who want all of their discs to be booktyped, this causes a problem because they will need to remember to change the setting every time the drive resets.
OmniPatcher's auto-bitsetting patch changes this default setting from "Normal" to "DVD-ROM" so that when a drive is reset, the setting will revert to "DVD-ROM" instead of to "Normal." Since auto-bitsetting only changes the default setting that the drive reverts to after a reset, it is still possible to use the LiteOn BookType Utility to change the settings around on a drive with a patched auto-bitsetting firmware.
For the newer firmwares (CS07 or newer, BS0R or newer, and BS41 or newer, to name just a few) that use non-volatile memory (i.e., the EEPROM) to store the setting, the booktype setting is not lost after a reset, and as such, it does not make any sense to have a patch that changes the default revert-to-after-reset setting, and the auto-bitsetting patch is thus not available for these newer firmwares. For these newer firmwares, just set the booktype once using the official utility and forget about it, even after reboots.
Because changing the booktype involves writing data to a disc, it is not possible to change the booktype of a recordable disc after it has been burned. For rewritable media, however, it is possible to change the booktype of burned media by using the LiteOn BookType Utility's "Write Now" button, if your firmware is new enough to support this feature.
metalmatt,
Try updating your Nero. The current vs is 6.6.0.16. Do your backups play ok on the drive you burned them with on your pc? Download dvd identifier http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ and see what it says the booktype is on your burned dvd's.

@Mort81
Thank you for the info. My 451s booktype utility has ALWAYS defaulted back to normal after reboot. I have been using it since last May 2004, so setting the booktype just became second nature.
What you are saying is to get the OmniPatcher which will make the default Dvd Rom?

mackdl,
That is correct. I had a LDW-451S crossflashed to a SOHW-832S and I used omnipatcher to automatically booktype all my dvd+r/rw media to dvd-rom. Worked like a charm.

So I upgraded to the latest version of Nero - but still get the same results. I checked out that DVD identifier and it lists the booktype as [DVD+R] - [DVD+R]

metalmatt,
What firmware vs do you have for your 1633S?

Hmm, I don't know. I have a litey SOHW-1633S crossflashed to a SOHW-1653S with led fix f/w and the lite-on booktype utility works fine. Will your backups play ok when you play them back on your 1633?
I had a similiar problem with mine before crossflashing when useing verbatum media. I crossflashed it and reset the eeprom with the eeprom utility and it now burns the verbs better than any other media. Here's a link to the eeprom utility if you want to try it. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441 Your inability to bitset still has me stumped.
You might explain you problem at the cd freaks forum http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=44 and see if they can get ya fixed up. They have a sub forum devoted only to lite-on/sony drives and are very knowledgable. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks, I'll check and see what cdfreaks throughs are on this. I just noticed however that when the burn completes and I go back to the DVD it doesn't appear if anything is burned on the DVD (when trying to burn a DVD video). But if I burn the DVD as a data disk it works fine.

Ok, so here's my latest. The reason I wasn't using Nero Express (which I have and all updated) is I was trying to get around converting files because it will only take bup, VOB and ifo files to burn to DVD. Also it doesn't have an option to make DVD menus. (unless i'm missing a lot or something).
But I finally just went and got a converter. Converted a file to a VOB, tried to burn it with Nero express - worked perfectly. So then I took that same VOB file and burned it with Nero vision express - i got choppy video and no sound.
So this defentailly sounds like something's jacked up with Nero vision express but that doesn't explain why it only burns the file if its converted.....
So I guess the next thing I'm going to try is to reinstall Nero vision express.
(and if i'm wrong about Nero express only taking thoes files and not having a menu option, please let me know even though i'd be amazed if i missed something like that it would make life easier)
