Hi, i have been using Rempeg2 for a while now and despite the slow speed, it is working great for me.

The question is what is an acceptable scale % I can get away with? Because I just burned The Godfather, and after rempeg2, there was 1 gig extra space left for burning. To me that is 1 gig I could have used in making higher quality.

I use the bitrate calc and The Godfather's results of 175 min. yielded a bitrate of 3092kb/s. After rempeg2 I compressed more than needed.

The bottom line is can I get away with making a movie by scaling all movies 85% on the scale and forgetting about the bitrate calc, or does that scale have to be roughly precise?

Sorry for the lenghthy post. Thanks in advance.

I dont understand what you are asking? There are some movies where all you need to go is 90% or less. But there are others, like 2.5 hour + movies that you might need to dip into the 70s, the 60s things start looking not so good.

Well thanks for the reply. Eventhough you weren't so clear as to what I was asking, you made perfect sense to me. I guess the next question is, can I calculate a scale % purely from the length of the movie, and deal in percentages, not bitrates. Because, if I calculate the bitrate of a movie, and I am left with 1 gig of extra space on my DVD-R, then in essence, I should have used a higher bitrate or percentage scale, right? Something that will come out to just under 4.3 gig.

The calculator I am using is found at www.vcdhelp.com, and sometimes the bitrates I am told to use, are to low leaving me with too much compression.

Also, I am running a 1.3ghz, P4, with 256MB RAM. Rempeg2 is taking me sometimes 30 hours to complete, when it should only take 6-10 I imagine. Any thoughts as to why it is taking me this long to compress? I don't run any other programs while compressing.

I use a program called DVDRCalc, and it gives you the percentage to recalculate with, as well as the bitrate. I could email you the file, but I cant remember where I downloaded it. Let me know and I can shoot it to ya, its very small.

With it, you type in the size of the vobs, the length of the movie that you get from ReMpeg, and the Bitrate, then you hit calculate and it gives you what the newbitrate will be and what percentage scale you need to use.

mobboss,

try using the guide below. it is worth usinf a decent calculator as it 'll give you the exact scaling required and use up your disc to the max.

Best site i found was this i=one
http://www.geocities.com/daseamonkey420

I seem to post this a lot, but not many other people seem to know about it, and I rank it one of the better ones out there at present

hmm... wow.. for me, rempeg takes me about 4-5 hours. i run Windows XP Prof and have an Athlon XP 2000+, 740MB DDR-SDRAM, 100Gb and 60Gb harddrives (ata100, 7200RPM)..

for me, an acceptable scalefactor was around 65% and up. i used to just rempeg for about 15 mins and then cancel it and then look at teh video stream with an m2v editor (such as tmpgENC) to see if the quality is fine or not.

however, i've gotten lazy recently.. instead of using rempeg to transcode and remux the video (for movies over 4.36Gb) i just use dvd2one (takes about 20 mins for me, quality is about the same).

I'll be updating my websites and guides this week. i'm going to make navigation easier and more customized (so you can choose to either rempeg a video or use dvd2one, use nero or record now to burn)

if you have any ?s, drop me note..

oh yea, thanks WalterPK for the props!

peace

Yeah, I've been using dvd2one. It is the best proggie I have used ever. No need to mess around with doing all the calculations. And, I got the new version which can do episodes and menus. I suggest all to get that tool.

mobboss, when u say it can take like 30 hrs, are u sure u aint running anything else in the background?

I had this problem, until i discovered that it was actually my anti virus prog that was slowing things down. Once i'd switched that off ( after unconnecting the modem) it was only taking like 6hrs.

Actually, Walter, I should have beem more clear...it was taking me that long with rempeg2. Now that I've been using dvd2one, I get it done in 20 mins for the whole movie, and 45 mins for the full disk (all the bells and whistles). Sorry for the confusing statement.
