Yeah I know, this is old school lol... Anyway my old floppy drive broke somehow, and I had a friend give me two of his. I just took out my old one, replaced it with one of these and when I booted up it looked fine; the lights flashed. Ok, but then when I tryed reading a few disks after the boot it just tells me to "insert a floppy into drive A".... This same problem happened with my other floppy drive too. From what I here is that the floppy should be automatically detected from BIOS and that the Standard Generic Windows Floppy Drivers should work fine enough. I checked my BIOS and there are no options that could help me either.. What do you think the problem is?

I also checked, and I am getting regular voltage to my floppy power cable. I as well ensured my IDE cable was securely in place. The IDE cable itself is bent up a little, this doesn't do anything right?

take a q-tip & isopropyl alcohol to clean the heads of the drive & let sit for a few minutes to let the alcohol to evaporate off the heads after cleaning. also try another floppy cable not ide cable as 2 different cables. make certain the cable is not plugged in wrong as in pin1 to pin34 instead of pin1. usually on floppy drive connectors, there is a missing pin which indicates pin 1 on that side.

Well, iv'e tried two drives, both with the same problem, so there really isn't any need to clean the drive... I suppose I will be buying a new floppy cable.

all this for just a cheap floppy drive? they only cost 12 dollars.Just go buy a new one.

dont know why u bother with floppy drives there a load of shit but thumb sticks are the way to but i know u need floopy for boot systems and that i didnt get one in my new pc

There is no point in buying a new floppy as it won't work. I know that "all this work" is just for a floppy drive, but: 1 - I don't like having things not working. 2 - It's a necessity for me that I have a floppy as I have had saved my computer from a format due to a boot disk.
Now if you please don't flame me... It seems a new cable doesn't work :P I have heard of a bug in Windows XP due to timing of some sort. This is usually fixed with a registy edit/patch. Can anybody point me in the right direction?
Floppies aren't going away...

if you have a bootdisk whether dos or windows, try it before it loads into windows but have the boot sequence changed to floppy 1st & floppy seek enabled. this way can see if windows problem or motherboard problem. i still use floppies on customers' computers.

I have concluded it is my motherboard that is screwed. I will have to get a new motherboard; this means I will have to replace my graphics card witha PCIe card, and I need to move up to an AMD 64bit processer. Because I am in no hurry for these items and want to wait a little while for them to improve, I guess I will have to forget about a floppy drive.
