To all,

I agree that the ATi pic looks better and I am going with an x800 pretty soon. I just can't pass up free TV and Vivo. I've been doing a little hands on with both cards, although stores tend to limit how long you can play with their computers before a salesman starts trying to sell you something. I do like the graphics on both cards. While I don't thing they are equal as each of them have their own little quirks or trade offs. Like I said I would be happy with either card but will go with the ATi because of the tuner and vivo included in what is esentially the same price. I'm not woried about drivers as those things are a thing of the past for each company. I'm sure I will be very happy with it.

Happy Computering,

If you're going with a tuner then ATI definitely the card that you want because you'll be dealing with interlaced video.

If you're getting a card to update your current system, you may want to check out the ATI 850 series. I opted for the X850 Pro for the 256MB DDR3, 4X/8X AGP ViVo (there are PCIe and AGP versions), with good quality at a decent price. Look at the pipes on that baby. LOL It's even got HDTV support.

Key Features
Up to 16 parallel rendering pipelines
256MB GDDR3 memory
PCI Express® native X16 lanes support
Direct X® 9.0 and OpenGL® 2.0 support
SmartShader? HD technology
SmoothVision? HD technology
VideoShader? HD technology
HyperZ? HD technology
3Dc? Support
DVD video playback
DVI display support
S-video and composite video input and output (VIVO)
HDTV Support

The X850XT is the absolute cream of the previous generation, which means it's super fast and yet ridiculously cheap. The PCI express version is available at newegg for $158 brand new.

The ASUS P4P800-E has the AGP slot. Without spending a lot more money, the X850 was one of the better AGP cards available. For my needs the X850 was the best way to go. It didn't hurt that I found one at a low sale price.

No, I realise yours is AGP because they only did the pro in AGP to my knowledge (I think, though i may be wrong). However I'm assuming theonejrs may have PCI express.

You're wrong, the Pro comes both AGP and PCIe.

With an Asus P4P-800-SE mobo, I'd suspect theonejrs has an AGP slot if using that board for the new acquisition.

How would the X850 Pro compare to the X1800XL? The latter is only $50 more, and i'm just curious, so I know what to recommend to people. Appreciably the X1800 does SM3.0 and the 850 only 2.0b but one wonders what the performance difference is.

Well there were only 2 options, right or wrong. I just let you know which you'd chosen. ;) As for the comparison with the X1800, all I can suggest is cross referencing the specs on the ATI site. I've not seen any comparisons fo the 2. http://www.ati.com/products/RadeonX1800/index.html

Brobear,

I went to Newegg, but all they have in the 800 or 850 series is PCI Express. No AGP. I can find refrences to it but no actual cards. Partly I blame Neweggs\'s new interface which is not near as good as the old one. I can find the All in Wonder X800 AGP for $299, but is this the same thing. I would like something with 256 or 512 MB DDR. Do they make anything like that??? Is this what I'm looking for?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102492
I don't know jack about ATi's numbering system and it is very confusing. nVidia's numbering system is much better as the higher the number, the better the card. I gather that the X1600 is not as good as the X800-XT???

So the 7300GS is better than a 6800 Ultra?

The X800XT all in wonder is pretty much the top of the last series for serious video processing (rather than just gaming) cards. A tad expensive, but then all fast AGP cards are.

The XT is supposed to have an option or 2 on the Pro. I got the Pro for $100 less than I could find an XT, so lets hope everyone is getting something extra for that $100. I just couldn't bring myself to pay more for a graphics card than the CPU. LOL I ended up spending only a bit less. Here's a link to a few of the X850 boards with an AGP slot. http://stores.tomshardware.com/search_attrib.php?topcat_id=&form_...

You can use the ATI link I posted and look at the specs on the cards. Some of the sites you find listed may have a good spec sheet as well.

I guess the high end of the X850 line would be something like the X850 XT Platinum. It runs about $420 (give or take) in the AGP slot version http://www.xpcgear.com/at2.html Look at the cooler on that baby. LOL In case I didn't mention it, the X850 Pro can often be found for about $250 for an OEM card.

Or you can give an X850XT standard a 5% overclock and save plenty of dollars, assuming your card isn't like mine that won't run OpenGL when overclocked, not a sausage.

With theonejrs interested in his system as a home entertainment PC, a gpu with a remote might be to his liking. The X800 XT All In Wonder has a remote. http://www.mwave.com/mwave/skusearch.hmx?SCriteria=3592857

As do pretty much all All-in-wonder cards, or if they don't they support the use of them. They're not compulsary buys, you could get a remote TV card or video capture card, but the AIW solution is a heck of a lot easier.

I'm kinda bummed! I went to Hounds to write a review of the movie "Bicentenial Man" with Robin Williams but Hounds no longer seems to have any such thread anymore.

I know this thread is Intel P4 vs AMD, and I am doing this on a superior Intel (with a crappy video card), at least compared to stock! Since most of the people in this forum helped make my 3.0 a 3.6, I feel justified in asking here. What happened?

Just think of how happy you would have been if you'd gotten an AMD X2??? I guess I'm an AMD fanboy. (Can't wait for the AM2.. Just wish I was rich.) Oh and to answer a previously unanswered question. nVidia's numbering system is just like ATI's newest numbering system. The first number is the "series" and the second is the level of card in that series. I'm sorry to tell you this, but a GeForce 6600GT will DESTROY a GeForce 7300GS or something. 6800 will beat a 7600. ATI I guess liked the idea and now we have their (Thousand) series. Same type or marketing. But an X850XT will blow away a X1300, X1600.. etc. Until you are up to the same "level" of card, the "budget" cards in the newest system aren't as good as the high-end cards in the last series.

*weird timeing theonejrs... I hit post and my post was not last when it came to the forum screen. Weird. I must have clicked like 5 seconds before you.

Brobear,

You are right on all counts! I don't know if you can get 20% out of a 3.0 Northwood but It would have run cooler. The justification was my way of an apology for asking a non technical question in a tehnical thread. I just wasn't sure if I would get any answer if I posted it there. Since I know most of the members hang here, I posted it here.

I liked Bicentenial Man, and a review under movie discussions at the hounds would be the place. Science fiction section.
