It was a DVD/CDRW combo drive and I'm pretty sure that the cache was 8 megs. Both of my plextor drives have 8 megs of cache.

Here's one of them.

@Sophocles

Sounds like a philosopher doesn't it??
Anyways, why did you go with the SATA interface with your burner? I've heard alot of people have had speed issues with them, and the drives themselves can't even burn/read faster than 21600 KB/s anyways. So why not the standard IDE??

edit: just googled sophocles:
I forgot he was the greek who wrote the Oedipus Trilogy. My theater teacher would be upest with me right now.

The A8N-SLi Premium would be good with that I'd have thought.
I stand corrected on the 8MB buffer theory, though I didn't claim they didn't in the first place - just ignorance!

The Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe is a good board. Sophocles and Theonejrs went over that selection earlier. You can check out the Asus boards at Newegg. Soph knows his Opterons and he went with the Deluxe. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?N=50001315+20102000...

The Deluxe is good, the Premium better with silent and more effective chipset cooling. The 32-Deluxe is only really recommended for SLi fanatics, because it puts out more heat since it has two Northbridge chipsets to achieve the 32x bus speed. The Premium has all sorts of goodies attached such as 8-port dual-controller RAID, external S-ATA ports, and all the Asus BIOS & software bundle, brimming with cables.

I didn't go with the SATA drive, they weren't available when I purchased mine, but I did post the wrong link and that's been corrected.

Sophists were the early philosophers and of course you're right about Sophocles, he composed plays.

Misrepresentation of the worst kind. For such infractions I'm going to pull your union card for 1 year, starting one year ago yesterday. LOL

I've only just realised how crossfire with X1600 cards works, but see that the software interface will undoubtedly slow things down further, so maybe Master-slave is better. I couldn't really care less about an external cable though, not that I want crossfire at all.

Perhaps you guys can help me. I just purchase and received all my components which I purchased from newegg.com. Every thing is working fine except I can seem to load windows XP onto system. Everything is working but I am bit concern about the NEC 3550A dvd dual layer drive because when I put disk in it doesn't sound like it is spinning. So I installed old 32x cdrom and loaded up Windows XP disk and I just keep getting boot up failure, please insert disk and press enter.

I made sure that the Dvd and/or cd-rom boots first in bios. Everything is working fine according to bios. I have a Biostar 6100 T-force 939 Micro ATX motherboard which according to many on Newegg.com, you will have issues loading and booting up Windows XP without floppy drive. I installed floppy drive and still a problem. So what would you guys suggest?

That would suggest to me that something is wrong with the WinXP disc. Try it in another computer to see if it will work.

Good luck,

Rich

Don't worry about it, a lot of boards will search for the hard disk and ignore you ROM.

Do this. Go into bios and disable every drive that you have but the DVD/CD Rom with windows in it. Reboot and it will recognize your Windows CD. Don't Worry it will also recognize and reformat your hard disk even when it's disabled. Once the installation process begins let it go until windows is installed. When it reboots and asks you if you want to boot from hard disk or CD rom, ignore it and in a few seconds it will make the right choice but if you hit a button it will start you over again. Once windows is well under the way or partially installed then you want to return to bios and enable your hard disk with CD rom booting first.

The Opteron was in the Deluxe for a while but that was when I was thinking about moding the chipset cooling so that I can get rid of the noisy fan and then it occurred to me. I still have an AMD 3500+ which needs a home so why don't I buy a premium and then put off the modding of the Deluxe for summer. It made perfect sense at the time. LOL

novicebb,

I had a Dell Optiplex GX-1 that did the same thing. Just disable everything but the drive you want to boot from and install XP. When it is finished just go into the bios and re-set everything in the order you want the computer to boot and it should work just fine. Once the installation is done the computer will not boot anyway as it won't be able to find the OS. It will say something like "Operating system not found" and it should give you the option of going into the setup where you can set everything properly.

Happy Computering

novicebb,

One more suggestion, for new installs, disable ?Force Bios? in your settings so you can make sure that the boot order you are requesting is always done.
