Hi,

I have been successfully backing up my DL films for the car DVD player for sometime using an XP Pro PC with DVD Decryptor 3.5.4.0 and a Sony DRU-810 dvd burner. I have been burning them directly onto Datawrite DVD+R DL without any problems at all.

I recently bought a car with a DVD SatNav system and wanted to back up the DVD Rom drive as it is worth a couple of hundred pounds and I would rather keep a backup in the car rather than the original.

The disk is data only DVD-Rom. No region coding or encryption (well that DVD Decryptor can find). I backed up the disk in the usual way and although the read/write was successful the DVD Sat Nav system does not recognise the disk.

I searched the web and discovered that there is a very specific way of backing these DVD's but it is not explained why. Apparently the only way to back one of these disks up is with:
Quote:
Apple Mac (only tested on Tiger (10.4))
Disc Utility
Toast 6.1
Pioneer 109 Dual layer DVD Recorder (very specific, has to be this drive, all others didn't work)

All you need to do is make an image in disc utility and save it as a DVD/CD master, it will make an image with the extension .cdr
Burn that image using Toast with the Pioneer drive.
A friend of mine has a Mac so I asked them to burn a copy for me. It worked first time. I have since compared the disk that I burned with the one burned on the Mac using DVDInfo Pro and there seems to be no difference at all?

Has anyone else tried backing up Navteq Sat Nav discs? Have you had similar problems? What could be stopping me from backing up this disc on a PC with a Sony Burner? What is the difference between a disc backed up on a PC and one on a MAC? Is there anyway to backup this disc using a PC?

Any help provided would me much appreciated.

Regards

Si

There's no conversion for this that I'm aware of from MAC to PC. Check the MAC forum to see if someone may have info. Happy Burning!

I am not sure what you mean. The reason for asking this question here is that I am wondering if there is any hardware/software reason why a MAC should be able to back up a disc over a PC? If so what is the reason? Does a MAC backup a disc in a different way to a PC?

*bump*

I guess no one out there can explain why a basic Mac setup can copy a Sat Nav disc over various attempts on a PC?

Not sure I can answer your question, but is it possible that your disk needs to be booktyped DVD-ROM before burning. Also, if that is the answer, then is your Sony burner booktyped capable?

But, I agree, I would think you could burn this disk on a PC.

Rich

Hi Rich and thanks for the reply. Yes the book type has to be changed to DVD-ROM but DVDDecryptor is doing this correctly. Apparently the Sony 810 is a BENQ underneath .....well that is how DVDDecryptor sees it and sets all dual layer disks to DVD-ROM normally with much success. Just this one disk won't backup.
