I checked the firmware page
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces and your drive is listed at the bottom of the page. According to it, the latest version is TU56. It sounds like you are many versions behind. Basically firmware is a software update that changes the memory in your drive to make it more compatible with newer DVD and CD media made since your drive was manufactured. Firmware is kind of like the operating system of the drive. The bigest problem is if you apply the wrong firmware to your drive. You may have to start with the oldest version they list there and work your way up to TU56. Just click on the blue text for the update version you want. A screen should pop up asking you what you want to do with the file. You can save it to your HD and run it, or you can open it up. I just save my to HD and open from there. If you do not have the latest firmware, your drive can get very picky about what media it likes. Here is a link to a FAQ about firmware:

I just went back to the link i gave you, and now i only see the latest as being BA13 as you said, but your heading shows TU11 listed as the firmware then below you show BA13. I the firmware i was looking at is the same number as your drive, but missing the V. Yours seems to be up to date if it is currently BA13 and your drive is the toshiba sd-r5372v. Use something like DVD Decrypter or Nero to check your drive manufacture and name. You need to know this exactly before attempting firmware updates.
hi ty for responce. i am using firmware TU11. i downloaded the ba13 and triwed to open it yesterday before i placed this and it opened but where the update icon was at didnt light up so i couldnt install it. So i am not sure what to do? but i ran it not saved it. my usb dvdrw is like 6 mth old so do you think it is old firmware. i know just because i just bought it that dont mean the the unit is new. I am nervous and dont wqant to screw up my writer. i have been having problumes writing dvd's.
