Update the firmware for the drive. Goto hp website, find your drive and find the latest firmware update and dwnld it. Should be fine then.

Yah, have an HP zt1290 with same problem. HP replaced the Toshiba drive with a Samsung CD/DVDRW and all is now copascetic. Actually, that Toshiba drive was a dog from the very beginning, and I was so happy when it died within warranty. Even out of warranty, you can purchase a slim drive in the open market at NewEgg for about $80 and be totally up to date with your operating system and hardware. Win XP Pro will take care of recognizing the hardware and the OEM will have any firmware drivers above and beyond XP. Of course, the best ASPI is still Nero's if you haven't updated the ASPI on your laptop, and this ASPI makes everything work better in the CD/DVD.

Oh and P.S. - I called HP during the day and got Washington State, USA with zero cultural attitude because I'm a woman (and an MCSE). Usually Indian support can't get past my gender, regardless of my tech skills. It is so ^%@$#%& annoying that I've started to call support BEFORE I purchase hardware, just to figure out where my calls will be routed. As soon as I can build my own laptops to spec (just like desktops), I'll never buy anyone's brand again except my own. I know, the BYO laptops are just coming out, but still not quite up to desktops - anyone up for a titanium laptop case like the ancient and no longer made Grid Systems? Oooh, count me in!
