http://compnetworking.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sd... here is a link that I used to re-dl winmx and from what I have read u must also go to this website http://www.p2pzone.net/download/goodies/hosts.zip
Below are the instructions after u have downloaded hosts.zip:
1) After downloading the "hosts" file (is a windows file included in the system) we can proceed.
2) Now paste the new file "hosts" in the Windows directory respective to its version:
For Windows 95/98/Me the directory is c:\windows\hosts
For Windows NT/2000/XP Pro the directory is c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
For Windows XP Home the directory is c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Now we can replace the "hosts" file.
3) For Win2k & XP users, sometimes may be necessary use the command "ipconfig /flushdns" from the command prompt.
4) Now, open WinMx and try to connect with primary connection!
This information was gathered from multiple sources an if further help is needed or this does not work for u let me know an I will do my best to assist.

Hash, this does not work for me. 1st, I have windows xp pro and C:winnt does not even exist, so then I slip down to the next option that's available for XP home, which I can find the "etc" yellow folder, open it and there is the 6KB file, hosts. I removed that file, and stuck in the new "hosts" file, and nothing, still trying to connect. I am not set up to use the primary selection for connection, so I do not. Anyway, in that folder, there is 1 or 2 other host's files, smaller 4KB, which I did not move. Ok, so then I tried the 2 other methods, ipconfig/flushdns and then, the other going into the DNS, properties and selecting automatic to manual. Still nothing.
Basics...I had removed winmx, installed the latest version, with the latest P.I.E patch, prior to accomplishing any of the above.
Still, no connection.
Yes, I would much appreciate you help with this.
I connect with DSL. There are no problems with the connection, other than the obvious.
Thank you kindly

If you are like I am and are lacking in the "technical skills" department, but at the same time, miss using WinMX, there is a quick, easy and free solution it is called MXPIE. There is no spyware or anything else bundled with it. For those a little more savvy and courageous, there is even a manual option.
So come on back to WinMX, and download to your hearts content. Thanks to these updates, not even the power of the RIAA can stop a network.
IF you have downloaded WinMX and still cannot connect, you can even get personalized realtime help. Just go to this link WinMX Channels Copy the Room name appropriate for your Language and paste it into your WinMX chat screen, then press the Join Button. This works on version 3.53 and up even if you are not connected. It allows you to join into chatrooms set up for you to get immediate help.
Everything you need at the MXPIE Website Free and Spyware free.
I have also found a site for Computer problem that is nice, prompt and VERY helpful. If there is a problem you need an answer to, they can help.
Realtime help available for WinMX 3.53 users having trouble getting connected. Go to WinMX Channels.

Winmx was taken down for quite a time now, why are you still trying to use it? Not that many even have it so it makes your chances of getting files even lower on the shares, you should try Limewire pro, just look it up in a p2p for "Limewire pro" perhaps ares in http://aresgalaxy.sourceforge.net/ this is also another great clean p2p.

RIAA tried to close WinMX down ... but the users brought it back... and if you follow the links in my post above you can get WinMX working in no time at all and it is totally free. WinMX is back now stronger than ever. Check it out today :)

Naw it's not. It's as weak as it has ever been.
Quote: "the links in my post above you can get WinMX working in no time at all and it is totally free"
That's the whole idea of p2p, that it's free...

I'm all for 'power to the people' and all, but at the end of the day, if you just want good fast speeds & lot's of files, you are best to steer clear of WinMX. It's finished.
By the way jadesnow, you cannot hotlink...yet ;)
