Open up device manager and open up IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and make sure they are set to DMA/UDMA mode or DMA/UDMA if available for both primary and secondary channels. Make sure they are not in PIO mode.If any of those controllers are set on PIO mode, uninstall the drivers of those particular controllers and re-boot- 1 controller at a time.

Can you post a burn log from Nero?

What brand name/format/and speed rate is your blank media?

Use this free handy tool to find the MID code of your media. Also note the Firmware version of your nec 3540 and post back that info.

That Nero burn log will also tell us that info.

I have similar problems on a different drive.
Any chance you could explain to me the differences between the different UDMA and DMA modes? I am not sure If mine is set correctly and there are around 8 different options under transfer mode. It is currently saet to 'Multi-word DMA 2'

We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent...

In my IDE ATA/atapi controller tree, I have 2 primary and 2 secondary.

Top primary channel, both device 0 and 1 current transfer mode is Ultra Dma mode 5

Lower primary channel, Both device 0 and 1 current transfer mode Dma if available and below that says unavailable.

Top secondary channel: Both device 0 and 1 are set to Ultra Dma mode 2

Lower secondary channel: DMA if available and current transfer mode is unavailable

None of my channels are in pio mode. Pio mode is a safety in windows. Usually about 5 or 6 burn errors in a row and windows will revert the direct memory access channels to Pio mode for safety purposes.Poor quality media is the usual culprit. This will really slow down your burning process if left in Pio mode.It could also do a number of other things.

If in pio mode, uninstall that channel, and reboot. Windows xp should automatically hook them back up to dma or udma. If more than 1 channel in pio mode, then uninstall, reboot 1 channel at a time.

I'm not sure of the difference between UDMA and DMA.
