Can someone finally tell me which one is better? I read a rumor that Bearshare is planning to add a blocking mechanism for Shareaza users. I also heard (this is from an unreliable source...) that Shareaza is untraceable where as Bearshare is. Shareaza I know is slow, because (??? not too sure ???) it doesnt hold as much of the Guntella network as it would like, not mentioning Bear Share's blocking tech (and Lime wire I heard is doing the same).... im getting confused with all the info im getting, some of its criss-crossing in my mind. I dont know that much about p2p but im beginning to learn...

obviously, nobody's safe with ANY p2p program, were all taking a risk when we download, but is Shareaza REALLY untraceable? I think thats just a load of BS... could someone tell me the truth? About the whole IP thing? abd whether or not what I heard is true? False? Thanks.

basically: Is Shareaza untraceable?

thanks for the info, I read that on the bulletin boards here, but I decided to get BearShare Lite, apparently it doesnt have the Save! add-on like the regular BearShare does... I just checked my control panel and it isnt in there (where as you couldnt un-install it without un-installing BearShare first) but I also read that BearShare pro doesnt have the adware too. So thanks =)

I also got Ad-Aware to check out my system... I havent done a second scan yet (after downloading BearShare Lite) but I read that someone else did it and didnt find anything... ill try again in a week or two to be fully sure.

im also using PeerGuardian now since there has been a lot of buzz on it over this website's bulletin boards... to reduce the number of unwatend IPs... ??

[But regarding my question...]

Im thinking thats impossible, since it's something like "I need to know the IP of the PC im downloading this thing or that file from..." yea? So if I can view the IP... why can't the government? or the RIAA? I don't really really know how it all works... I dont have much experience with all this.

Is Shareaza untraceable while BearShare is? Are ANY p2p programs untraceable (from the Government or the RIAA)? Basically, what I was told (by some guy I met) was that If you use Shareaza, nobody can trace your IP. Dream situation, coz then if they can't trace you, you can download hundreds of songs at the same time... AND constantly! HEY. MAYBE I could do that when I lived in the PHILIPPINES but I thought the rules over here (I live in the Bay Area... but I mean in the US) wouldnt allow for something like that to take place! ??? LOL! Could someone PLEASE explain it to me?? hehe

but then, if they cant trace your IP... how do people download from you? its a catch-22... a paradox? HELP!

firstly, you won't get in trouble for downloading, but for uploading.

secondly, there are no 'proper' p2p's that are anonymous. there are a couple in trials called 'antz' 'mute'......but they are crap. apparently freenet are in the process of making an anonymous p2p which could be available, but that cannot be for sure. otherwise there'a always a risk of being caught.

lastly, have you tried bittorrent?

Yea Bittorret has come up in a lot of these blogs... I use mIRC which I understand is that, but my connection speeds on it are sometimes hit or miss... anywhere from 2KB/s to 40 KB/s...

how does that work? is THAT untraceable?

[what I read...]
The Odd Kids Next Door

While all of these progressions have been happening, two other pieces of file sharing software have been developed that are more likely to affect the internet in general, Freenet and Bittorrent. Freenet is the ultimate in privacy, as it creates a fully fledged network, more like the internet than a file sharing application, that is completely anonymous and untraceable, and although still in early stages is pushing the boundaries of current technology. In contrast, Bittorrent is more easily applicable to current situations as it offers swarm downloading of any file, with the files linked to from trackers, thus making it possible for current websites to offer their downloads through Bittorrent, making them much cheaper to run.

[...]

can you explain the "with the files linked to from trackers, " part? trackers?

"Of course were speaking Jebadiah. You're fired."

This may be a late replay but oh well. Fact is out of either one of those I'd go with Shareaza, however Ive stopped using Shareaza and as well as E Donkey (obviously) since Oct. 2003 due to the lack of privacy. In October 2003 while up at school my IT dept at my school decided to cut me off of the network due to a copyright infringement and threatened lawsuit by the lovely RIAA. This was while using Shareaza. Just a little heads up.
