I was just wondering what are the real chances of being caught. I also wanted to know what everyone is really looking out for. What are people being sued for, like movies, porn, music? I thought it was really just music they are really big on?

for the most part i think they are heavier on the people sharing tons of music, but i suppose you can get caught with about anything. I'd say the odds are in your favor, considering there are most likely millions of people doing it and there aren't too many cases that you really hear about. The ones you do hear about are pretty high profile so they seem larger than they are in my opinion.

Sorry,
Tip 2: Get an external Drive to store all your goodies. Then unhook when
not needed. They can't see your files if the Drive is not connected!
It will run you 100-200$.is it worth it??

Well...I've been downloading moderately for years it seems. Everything was going fine until I was warned by my ISP at the beginning of the summer. They received a letter from the SBA (software business alliance) stating I had been uploading a copy of xp from my ip address. This was true I had been downloading the new 64 bit edition and left it on overnight forgetting to shut it off once my download was done giving them plenty of time to track me. The isp was nice about it and I played dumb, telling them my wireless router wasn't secure at the time so perhaps someone had broken on to the network. They said fine just make sure it doesn't happen again and that the first offense is usually a verbal/written warning. I haven't downloaded much since and I do use pg2. The thing is, I've been told pg2 and other similar apps keep you a little bit safer but in reality don't do much at all. That is because groups like the RIAA and SBA don't always use known ip addresses (to the blocklist) to connect to trackers to log who's sharing what. Also, even if they are blocked they can still get your ip, they just won't be able to download anything from your computer. As far as deleting the evidence goes, using removable hard disks and whatnot is kinda pointless unless you have a huge collection you are sharing because to get busted all they need is a log of your ip info. I am now going to look into Tor but I wonder how much difference that even makes. The only truly safe way to download is to not do it at all, second best get into newsgroups, irc, or a good old fashion warez site lol.

Hi, I got the dreaded letter the other day to say my internet had been disabled, after looking at the files that got me into trouble, i saw that i had downloaded photoshop. I thought this to be a little strange because i have downloaded 1000's of movies, games, music. Nearly all of the time i use private torrent sites (torrentleech, filelist, blackcats etc.), but for photoshop i downloaded it using torrentspy, was this my downfall? I dont want to have to stop my beloved downloading. Therefore my question is, are private torrent sites safe from the mpaa, RIAA? well safer anyway?

I should have seen this thread befor posting. Okay here's my question. If you download onto a cd-rom from another computer and then use the cd-rom on your own computer are you at risk of being caught?

For psycho82,
Torrentspy gives it's IP and tracker information to the RIAA ect.. Google it to find out more, this is a recent thing!
Tip:When your downloading torrents from a non Privite web site, look at it's privacy statment! if they don't have one don't DL!

Cheers

hey i recently downloaded about 20 songs, the movies Saw, Wedding Crashers, and CKY4. I uninstalled limewire recently after that. i was just thinking that, is it actually illegal to download the music? or is it illegal to UPLOAD the music. in other words, if you just remove all of your shared folders can they catch you?
please reply, thanks

From everything I know tk it is legal to DOWNload a file if you already have a legal copy of it. In other words you can download but you cannot upload anything copyrighted. That's who they're really going after, the uploaders (sharers). The safest thing to do is not do it at all but if you want to use P2P programs then you should get peerguardian 2 or protowall. They are both free and help to stop the ip addresses of groups like the RIAA or MPAA from connecting to your computer.

a quote of your article that supports my dowloading/ uploading oppinion

Kori Bernards, vice president of corporate communications for MPAA, said the movie industry wants people to understand the consequences of Internet piracy. She said the problem is the movies that were downloaded were then available to thousands of other users on the iMesh network.

"Basically what you are doing when you use peer-to-peer software is you are offering someone else's product that they own to thousands of other people for free, and it's not fair," Bernards said.

Illegal downloading costs the movie industry an estimated $5.4 billion a year, she said.
