I have a problem that I know is probably easy to solve, I just need some help. I have an old HD that has XP Pro as the OS. On the new PC, I have XP Home Edition installed. The computer detects the drive and everything, but when I try to open it, it says I need to format it. I'm very weary about losing this information, because its all my samples and music production software. I have the jumpers set to the right pins, and everything is working properly, I just cant access the info on the drive....Help PLEASE!!

I doubt this is it, but go into the bios of the comp. Make sure the old drive isnt set as a boot drive and also go under the ide channel that the 2nd hard drive is hookied to and press auto detect. Make sure its set to auto detect if your bios has it. Now this bios should read it.

When you used magic....did it show the 2nd drive or no?

Did it look formatted in majic?

What make hard drive is it? Goto the manufacturers website and download a diagnostics tool and do a full scan! See if it comes up with any errors?
If you cant get a tool from the manufacturers web site then...
You could use Maxtor PowerMax tool (it should work for any drive not just maxtor : )

you can get it here:

Okay...use partition magic to check for errors. If not....you need to download that tool cause the mbr and boot code may be frigged up on the drive and the utility can fix it.
