Converting WAV to mp3- different length!

I just used to virtualdubmod to convert a tv show I recorded(mpeg2) to xvid. After that was done. I wanted to convert the wav to mp3 so it was even smaller. I went into virtualdubmod and clicked save wav. After this was done, I opened it up with audacity and exported it to mp3. The only problem was that when I loaded it back into virtualdubmod, it told me the length was different. Ive tried a fair few programs to convert it, and they all give a different length. Here are some Ive tried. All converted to 128kps bitrate

ORIGINAL WAV length: 20.24.240
audacity mp3 length: 20.24.288
headac3e mp3 length: 20.24.206
besweet mp3 length: 20.24.333

So, does anyone know of a program (free or with a trial) which can accurately convert WAV to mp3? Thanks
