running windows xp.. i cant open the task manager. Well thats a bit un true. When I CtrlAltDel and go to task manager it is minimized and I cant open it or maximize it. And if I try again it just creates a second open copy doing the same thing. Im guessing some sort of virus that is trying to hide itself by not letting me view whats running.. any ideas?

Can you right click on the task bar and see task manager? If so, try running it that way next and let us know. Look at your drop down menu Options for minimize, hide, etc. Let us know.

Did you try this:

start*run*taskmgr.exe or start*run*taskmgr

what does that do??

scan your C drive for task*.exe and report back your findings with filenames and folder locations.

Thanks.

Here is a link to an Awesome piece of software that replaces task manager. Let's figure out your issue first; then, try this software out another time. It actually replaces task manager. Did you by change install this sfw and replace task manager??

Ok, it is probably spyware / virus that corrupted taskmgr.exe. Can you replace it with another copy from another Computer and try it??

taskkill is used to kill a started task; ie PID (process ID); same thing as killing it via taskmanager when you right click on the process and perform end task.

If so, give that a try ... replacing the exe with another copy. It may be corrupt.

From ddp, try this:

Download, Install & Run

ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/
cwshredder http://www.intermute.com/products/cwshredder.html
ad-aware se http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-...
spybot s&d http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html
do an online virus & spyware scan with trendmicro; which you already did.

Let us know.

after doing all of the above, and making sure i had all my windows updates.. after a restart it opened once... however, it went right back to its old ways quickly. Also Word and Excell have been acting up from time to time. Occasionly when I open them they stop responding either right away or as soon as i click on something.
